This looked similar to golden/goose berry but they are yellow/orange berry inside not like the color in your picture.. the outside layer looked the same tho, it start out green (leafing looking) turns yellow and eventually only the "structure" part is left, like the picture.

I have no idea what you got there, Jim, but it reminded me of this, which I saw growing in my back yard. No clue what they are, either.

we used to call them Jack O Lanterns. My mother had a bunch of them she used for decorations, but in the stage before yours. they look like they are made of thin paper like paper bags. Don't know the real name.

on edit, look up jack o lantern plant.

Well that makes sense since your Mom is local, but google says they are poisonous to pets, now I have to go out and search to insure the dogs do not get into them.

When Google says a plant is poison, it generally means, if you eat a ton of it, you will feel sick. I've got English Ivy on a fence and the berries look attractive, but you'd only ever eat one because of the bitterness.

Looks like common or black nightshade to me. This fruit types is described as bladder fruit and there are a number of plants that have them Goldenrain tree Koeleuteria paniculata) is one. I have the nightshade in my yard every year. I weed whack it down so it doesn’t fruit as it will make mammals sick.

I found the plant that had mature seeds, they are green and turn to lace when they dry out, here they are on a vine, green at bottom then yellow then clear

Looks like nightshade to me. If you grow non GMO soybeans you can’t have any of that stuff in the beans so our renter walks about 40 acres of bean field every year pulling those plants. He looks better than me for it too.

Myron, that looks like Apache Plume. Lovely plant, xeric and nice in low/no water gardens.
A similar one is Prairie Smoke, but it blooms earlier in summer, at least here in Denver

The orange version with an orange bulb or seed is called a Chinese Lantern Plant. The seed is edible & used to reduce fever. If you mix it up with nightshade, that would be bad!

Another possibility is the Smooth Ground Cherry or Virginia Ground Cherry. Another is the Clammy Ground Cherry.

That's what we called them as kids, not jack o lanterns. I was half right.
