Summertime cuisine

Rita shopped the garden for some fresh vegetables and filled a peck basket in short order. Looks like the corn is about ready to go. Got out my 60,000 btu stove and 24 quart stock pot for blanching corn yesterday. Grandma had a summer kitchen to keep the heat out of the house, we have a garage and a fan. She didn’t get electricity til 1934. We are much better off. She survived the flu epidemic of 1918-19. My mom was born Jan 2, 1919.

My garden has provided raspberries (second crop coming soon) and strawberries and asparagus and rhubarb, but tomatoes aren't doing too well and I had to barter rhubarb for salad greens to enjoy with the week's catch- Dungeness crab. Crabbing has been iffy this season. Poachers are out in force (we can tell when all traps have bait gone, totally empty, and have been moved from where we dropped them (current or wind drift as the thief takes the crab, then doesn't recheck location.) But every so often we do okay.
