Winter Texans

We like out WInter Texans but bringing this 25 degree weather with them will force us to re-think our welcoming policy. )

That’s gotta be the worst, places where it’s usually decent weather in December being below freezing.

It’s not going to get above freezing today in New Orleans. Dang!

I feel your pain,,,,,literally

It hasn't popped above 0F yet, here in Wonderful Winter Wisconsin. Sunny, but winds gusting to 40 mph.

Just another day in Paradise. The cold & snow here keep the riff-raff away.

stay frosty,

I just came in from taking Jake out. It’s breezy all right. Gusts in the last hour to 50 mph. I wasn’t out long but justified it because I had two fresh bags of chips ahoy in the car and Jakey and I needed a snack. We eat them together. I break off pieces with no chocolate in them for him and I get the rest. He’s good with that. The visibility from sideways blowing snow is about 1/2 mile.
Just glad we don’t have to go anywhere today.

Ho, ho, ho…speaking of weather, our local newspaper says that we dropped 40.8 degrees in 30 minutes on Wednesday. We went out for dinner when that was happening. Wife’s phone said it was 37 degrees and my car said it was 6. Sheeesh. Looking forward to Arizona in February.

Wow, that’s a steep drop. I’ve never seen outside air temperature drop that quickly

It gets worse, some other places

In Cheyenne, WY, the temperature fell from 43 to 3 degrees in 30 minutes on Wednesday afternoon which broke the one-hour temperature drop record of 37 degrees.

40 degrees drop! That's one strong cold front. How well I know, & feel here.

Our daughter lives in Cheyenne. She sent a picture of her inside north facing door knob that had a build up of frost on it. Extreme wind combined with the extreme cold drop.

Cheyenne’s only 45 miles north and sounds like they had exactly the same weather fun. Never been in anything like it, including the 13 years we lived next door to your town, in Middleton WI. Though I do remember a Wisconsin weekend with 70 below wind chill. I think our wind chill on Thursday was about 50 below. High was minus two. I do NOT like winter in my old age, even though I loved the snow and cross country skiing while in Wisconsin.

Hey, sounds like a chinook. Let's hear from our friends in Montana (places such as Browning) and southern Alberta (Calgary). The chinook phenomenon is very familiar to those folks.

This thing is much, much bigger than a Chinook

It's covering much of the continental USA, and not a regional, mountain downslope event. Bigger. Huge. An Arctic air mass, Polar jet stream directed, coming, some say, from Siberia. Ahhh...them Rooskies again. I better stop here. NYET!

The thing about a chinook is that it’s a warm wind. The Bomb cyclone we are encountering is a cold front.

If you ever get a chance to see our friend Jack Gladstone perform at Glacier, at a Native American event or in a school, nature center or summer festival, don’t miss him.

I’ve been running from it, gulf coast was cold so made my way to Arizona, way nice here.
When I was in grade school the science experts told me of the great freeze coming from both poles to get us in the middle. Then it was Gore and his experts with the warming.
Is coffee good or bad, egg yolks, red meat, vegetables, on and on. Now I’m on a bmi quest, not fun but at least it’s better for the joints.

Yep, you're correct. Just thinking of the sudden drops and increases in temperature in Montana/southern Alberta during the winter. I remember lining up for a movie in Calgary during Christmas vacation wearing a light jacket. We were not so fortunate in Edmonton.

They refer to the "Alberta Clipper' frequently down here in Minnesota when the Arctic air moves in. I have to admit that I can tolerate the cold much better than the heat. I attribute it to growing up in Edmonton. Dave Walter and Brian B-P, did you experience the Edmonton winter of 1969? We didn't hear the term bomb cyclone, or polar vortex back then. It was just damn cold.

Edmonton weather nerdery: It was the winter of '69

Nice photo, I especially noticed the beargrass in bloom. I think that’s what it’s called. Jack has had a summer concert series that’s about once a week in the church in the park. It’s fascinating.

A fellow from our home town was a school administrator. He saw Jack perform when he visited Glacier one year. From there he learned Jack did school programs. He pursued that and for several years Jack was visiting several schools in the area each winter and doing his presentation. One of the schools was where Rita taught for 22 years. He’d also do a night program at one of the local nature centers.

My family came to enjoy his music and his messages through his songs. Our daily lives are better from having met Jack and enjoying Jack’s work. It’s fairly common for us to refer to a song line or title in our daily pursuits.
“Faces the Blizzard” seems appropriate for this week.

Merry Christmas

73 degrees here in Puerto Vallarta. Won´t go north until April. Next winter, we are coming back with our 21C for the winter. This winter, we are in an apartment just checking the area out.
