Yes, the original 5.0 was towed by trucks such as the old Ford Ranger.

I don't think that's likely; most people who would buy a trailer even the size of the original 5.0 will choose a full-size truck now. The change in size from the original single-axle 5.0 to the first tandem-axle 5.0TA was done partially to accommodate the preference of buyers for larger trucks (so a higher pin height and sufficient pin-to-trailer-body clearance was needed).
