Am I a pre-Boomer?

When I was a child in the early fifties in NJ there was an amusement park on the western fringe of my town. It was called Olympic Park. Had a huge beer garden/ picnic grove, with a bandstand, a building where you could roller skate on wood floors, rows of carny businesses like shooting galleries, where you could win a fuzzy prize, and of course, a big roller coaster, bumper cars, bumper boats, many other thrill rides.

For decades it was the best place in the city to have fun, and what a happy place it was! It said “SMILE” at the entrance. Even had an Olympic sized swimming pool.

When we drove down Springfield Avenue I always watched for 43nd Street because then you could see at its end the big wooden arched entrance to Olympic Park. I would beg dad to turn down 43th Street and take us there, but, that was the early fifties. Because of the Polio epidemic raging then he thought it was too dangerous to be where so many people would be gathering.

It all changed when they introduced the Polio vaccine.

Hi: MyronL... My oldest brother didn't have Polio. What he did have was a dark stain on his medical records which prevented him from ever holding a Commission in the RCAF. He did attain the highest rank he could just B4 retirement though. Alf

Lucky you. No date given for our booster shots yet. Wish I had one, I'll be doing a lot of commercial flying next week. Going to have to trust my N99, no not N95, mask.

Turning 59 on Halloween and having just finished chemo earlier this year I was Moderna BOOOOOSTED on Friday and the wife on Sunday when she turned 65!

Be sure to get vaccinated and wear a mask like they do in the operating rooms to protect your Sons, Daughters, Grandchildren, Aunts, Uncles, Grandparents, Friends, Neighbors and your other Fellow Humans.

Be Good!

Got my Moderna booster yesterday. I made an appointment at my local Publix supermarket and got the shot. I expected chills and fever last night as happened with the second shot in March, but all I had was a slightly elevated temperature for a while. So far, so good.

This whole thing has turned into complete nonsense…

Politicians wanting more control and attention.

The extreme pro vaccine and the extreme against both throwing out all logic.

Still people smoke cigarettes and eat like farm animals, knowing all diseases thrive off of you being unhealthy.

Sugar equals cancer, being fat leads to nothing but circulatory and joint problems.
If anything needs to be stopped its the manufacturing of cigarettes.

People treat their campers better than their own bodies.

Covid-19 can easily be spread in the air to our Grandmothers, Grandfathers, Moms, Dads, Sons and Daughters regardless of their political/religious/societal/geographical persuasions but nobody can give anyone diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and I certainly can't give anyone my cancer.

Just a reminder: discussions on this topic generally devolve into political arguments. One post was reported. After review the post was deleted. Keep it civil.

Nothing to do with how we vote, I'm glad my 95 years-young Mom got her booster yesterday and I have a Saturday appointment for mine (we are the only two in the family that are eligible under current age/risk factor guidelines).

So far our (fully vaccinated) family has avoided any infection even though the niece and nephew have both been notified of 'potential exposure' in school classrooms, gymnastics classes, and 'crew' (rowing) on multiple occasions with resultant isolation and multiple follow-up tests in that unit of the family when those occurred.

Whether our good fortune (knocking on wood) is due to luck or our habits of rigorous personal adherence to CDC guidance (vaccination, masking, distancing, etc) we don't know of course (perhaps a combination of both?), but we'll continue those practices and press-on through the fog, doing our best to balance risks of life with enjoyment of life's pursuits.

Wishing the best for everyone whatever your choices and practices may be, but please consider 'strangers' you inevitably encounter, your acquaintances and loved ones, and remember that we are all in this together!

Which generation are you? Boomer, Gen X, Millennium, or Generation Z? Today the time span between generations is thought to be around fifteen years. That’s a leap of faith, of course, since there is no basis for it. So, does a person born in 1965 or later (Generation X) have different values, life experiences from someone born before that? And, what about someone born between 1981 and 1990?

Chronological boundaries are pretty silly, of course. The earth still takes the same time to go around the sun. (Of course some will deny that.) No DNA is unique to Generation X. --Yet we can happily gloat about the “fifties” as the good old days, or the “forties” being of the greatest generation. Generation Z (1997-2012) is no more ethically motivated than other generations.

And, no more different than them living back at the end of the 1800’s and into the 1900’s. Americans who fought against organized labor, woman suffrage, ethnic or racist stereotypes, are of a same mind as those today who deny climate change, -- or who fight against vaccine protections against Covid.

My wife and I both got our boosters last week. Both of our daughters have gotten the jab. Our oldest daughter works at a children's hospital. Last week their pediatric icu was full of young Covid patients.
