Bummer...dudes

I'd been tinkering all winter on mods and additions to my rig, installed all items this past week and was planning an escape from post winter Wisconsin in a couple of days to the sunny south. It's not to be. Folks we'd intended to visit are in self quarantine ,and others possibly exposed to the virus, and the current flurry of announcements, cancellations and events has led to a re-evaluation of plans.

It's of no matter. Better safe than so sorry.

Bon voyage to all of us souls.

Yes it's certainly a bummer especially for our six year old granddaughter here in GA who was looking forward to Disneyworld in just over a week, now she'll be off school and going nowhere. As for us, our shorter than expected winter break means heading for home Wednesday and having to again winterize the trailer. However at this time I would rather be at home than facing getting this. It cost me nearly $50 to cancel two FL SP reservations yesterday.

Bummer x2

We were partially packed for a trip to our favorite New Mexico State Park.
Elephant Butte.
With a 4WD tow vehicle you can camp right on the waters edge.

Elephant Butte Lake State Park New Mexico

Then NM closed all their State Park campgrounds.

My wife interpreted that as a clear sign to stay home until we get a better picture of how this mess will play out.
So we are.

Our pickup date is April 29th. That is looking more unlikely with each passing day. But.......

Anyone interested in buying our purchased plane tickets and accommodation to Hawai'i and Maui April 15th? You do have to leave and arrive in Calgary.

Maybe they could also buy my tickets to Boston the same week?

Hmmm, one of the bright sides to all this, at least for me, is that I was thinking at least I would still be able to take the trailer out and camp somewhere. Yeah, other travel plans are on hold right now, but anyone can still go camping, right? That "social distancing", or whatever it is we're supposed to be doing, would be entirely compatible with setting up your Escape off the beaten path, right?? No need to sit inside your house all day bummed out, get outside and have some fun! Public lands have not been shut down, at least not in the western US, and there are millions of acres in which a person can camp, hike, hang out, sit by a campfire, and enjoy the out of doors. It's much easier to maintain that 8-feet distance from others (or whatever it's supposed to be) and breathe in fresh, virus-free air when you're outside. Also a good dose of daily sun will do a person's immune system a world of good... That's what I think anyway! Escape the craziness and get out there!

Yes it would be great to continue camping after our return (now leaving tomorrow) home but in Canada it's hardly the time to go camping. Jim too bad you'll miss the HI trip. We have plans for Escape rally but we'll see if that's still on and the wedding we're supposed to be attending in CA in June.

Jim, for what it's worth, check with the airline for a possible refund. We have friends who were partially refunded for their air fare to Thailand several weeks ago when the virus focus was on China and other parts of Asia. -Tom

We will be looking for airline refunds. So tough to contact them as they are so busy. None of them has contacted us to say the flight is cancelled. Online, at least for the trip there, if still shows us booked reserved.

This makes no sense to me. Camping is a great way to practice “Social Distancing”. Here in WA, one of the hardest hit areas, they are actively promoting folks go camping.

That was my theory as well. Campers don't interact with each other unless they are part of a group. Hopefully authorities will recognize this and not close state park campgrounds for fear of contagion. They may have other reasons, though.

I'm currently in the Portland, Oregon area. I was here mainly to visit a friend (done) and tour the city, especially to go to the great Powell's City of Books (not done, due to current events). I broke a tooth, so after I get it "crowned" tomorrow I'm heading for the hills. I think I'll try to hide out in Hell's Canyon for a couple of weeks until I can decide what to do next.

BTW- Oregon Public Radio in Portland has a *great* HD Radio music channel, and I'm saying this as a person who is not a big fan of public broadcasting. The music is all new to me, and I like it. In fact-- I might even run out and get a tattoo and piercing, and color my remaining hair. Well, maybe not on this trip...

You might want to ask the dentist if he or any of his staff attended this conference.

This is certainly not the case for me. I love meeting other folks from various regions of the continent and will often converse with them, often around an evening campfire or just sitting around having a cocktail. I learn lots of stuff from them, much of it about activities to do and places to see.

I very often just walk the campgrounds finding friendly folks who are social. One of the things I like about travelling about.

This morning it was 17 Deg F , there is snow on the rooftops and on the ground and the ponds and lakes are still ice covered
The local campgrounds are closed and won’t open for two more months
I am self quarantining myself at my pole barn ( Closest neighbor is about a 1/2 mile away) and trying to get somethings done on our trailer
I no longer can take the cold as well as I did in my youth so 3 or 4 hours of working outside is about my limit
Hopefully when Memorial Day comes the weather and the current situation has improved
Until then I will stay home and enjoy Spring

PS; 2” to 4” of snow predicted for Wed and since I like shoveling snow sort of a blessing .

And we shall stay home to do our small part to help ‘flatten the curve’.

There will be plenty of time for camping once this virus fades into history.

This illustrates the difference between those who use their trailer to camp (Jim) and those who use it as a rolling hotel room (me).
