Event cancellations....

The Calgary Stampede was just cancelled for this year, as was the Calgary Folk Fest. What major events in your neck of the woods have been shut down?

We were really lucky that the SXSW (South by Southwest) festival in Austin in March was canceled, things were just beginning to get serious and they made a good decision, it brings in visitors from all over the world and would surely have turned Austin into a virus hot spot if it had been held. New Orleans went ahead with Mardi Gras and when we see what resulted from that we really dodged a bullet.

I suspect any and all big events this summer will be canceled, even if things start to open back up they surely will want to avoid huge gatherings of people. I'll be watching to see what happens with the Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque - first week of October, too soon just yet for them to cancel it but I will be surprised if it happens this year.

Winnipeg Folk Festival cancelled. Our own small town has a great Canada Day celebration. It has been cancelled and it's unlikely our pool will open this summer.

The Indian Wells Masters tennis tournament near Palm Springs was one of the first to cancel in early March. Normally attracts up to 450K over a two week run and generates an estimated $100M to the local economy.

Weiser Idaho National Old Time Fiddle Festival was canceled. A Dave Bromberg concert we were planning on at the end of May in Eugene, OR has been rescheduled for Dec. We haven't heard of a decision on the Sister's OR Quilt show in July. I'm starting to focus on domestic house projects, bringing things I had planned for 2021 forward to this year since so many of our camping plans are looking iffy.

It might be easier to figure out what hasn't been cancelled. That is easy, almost nothing.

One thing I've noticed that hasn't cancelled, but changed is hot rod groups. Instead of parking for a show 'n shine, they're cruisin'. Small groups <50 vehicles, drive slowly by hospitals, etc and blow their horns in support of healthcare workers. In some places it's turning into a regular 'Wednesday' afternoon activity. One last night cruised by a 3-step senior home and I guess the windows of the building had a face in nearly every window. Administration knew they were coming and so prepared some of the seniors for a 'look see' out the windows. Lots of waves and clapping. I applaud these groups initiative!

Very true... also announced a bit later was that all events in Alberta with groups larger than 15 people are prohibited until at least the end of August. I think the Covid19 outbreaks in High River and Brooks shutting down the meat packing plants have got their attention.... Not belittling this decision at all, this has the potential to get much more serious...

Even small, very local things like our Saturday Green Market have been canceled. Bad for the local farmers that make their money at the market.

Swiftsure Yacht race and Canada Day celebrations in Victoria. Pacific National Exhibition in Vancouver. To name a handful.

Well, sadly, ours is opening. They claim careful social distancing, no crafts- nothing but food/produce/plant starts- but they are going to let people in to roam freely so I expect cases to go up soon again. Some are doing drive-up ordering and pickup and that makes more sense. People pick over produce at an outdoor market and I don't believe that being told not to will stop them.

Four community markets have set up a website where you can order most anything that’s for sale. You then pick up your order at a central location.

The markets are hoping to open on a limited basis in perhaps June depending on the circumstances.

And of course music festivals Coachella and Stagecoach have been cancelled down here near Palm Springs. I'm told they have over 400,000 attendees!

Do you know for a fact they will be "roaming freely"? In San Luis Obispo only the Thursday evening Farmer's market was shuttered, however there are at least 6 others throughout the county that have been open. They do have measures in place- one way for example and encourage following guidelines. We have had 149 cases with one death and one patient currently in ICU. I believe people want to do the right thing and at some point we have to realize we cannot live in a bubble and will be taking some risks. Otherwise the cure will overwhelm us.

"Following guidelines" is the problem. Some will. Some won't. The people willing to go will be the people who are not worried so they often do not follow guidelines. Unless they are rules, not guidelines, and someone is willing to make them leave, I don't see them following guidelines.

Balloon Festival

There has been no official word yet on whether the Albuquerque Balloon Festival will be cancelled or not. Last year, 886,037 people attended so it seems to me that event will eventually be cancelled. NM was one of the early states to lock down but sadly, the Pueblos and the Navajo Nation didn't get the memo. They have now been very hard hit by Covid 19.

I hope it doesn’t get canceled. We attended last year festival and it’s fantastic to see in person
