We can’t go back to normal.
Normal wasn’t working.
If we simply go back to normal,
We would have missed the lesson.

Surely we can do better. Surely we can.

Corn cobs also made a great fuel for burning in the wood stove but you had to watch it so that the fire didn’t get too hot . The local farmers are out plowing their fields and spreading manure , getting ready for Spring planting . You have to admire their optimism . Hopefully commodity prices will go up enough to at least cover the cost of production

A little fuel oil on some cobs, some sticks out of the yard and a few nice pieces of hickory and the next thing you know the kitchen was warm at grandmas and it felt good on your rear end after a night in the upstairs bedroom where there was frost on the walls. I’d give a lot for those days back today. Always liked the outhouse too.

Our health care workers are amazing!

Recalling Sir Winston's famous reference to fighter pilots during the "Battle of Britain" is appropriate here.

Nature is spreading a nice blanket of white nitrogen on the fields this Easter Sunday
We still have an outhouse, comes in handy on occasion.

I remember the single paned windows with ice on the inside and with the radiator heat, they were always fogged up. My mother took newspapers rolled up and we put it under the doors to stop drafts. I would listen to my crystal radio, with an antenna outside and grounded to the radiator, picking up WKBW out of Buffalo NY and WBZ out of Boston. Ironically most of the skipped signals were north to south not west to east. Was not until I was in Iowa where WLS from Chicago and KOMA from Oklahoma City was listened to. Fm radio was not out until 70's.

Crystal radio

Hi Jim
I ran a wire to the outside and hooked it to the heavy metal gutter and downspout. Then I was cooking with gas. KAAY Little Rock, WLS Dick Biondi in Chicago, WLW Cincinnati, KDKA Pittsburg and on into the night when I fell asleep. I listened to a lot of baseball back then too.

Hi Alf
I could get Boston some nights and would live for the three game series between Boston and Cleveland and Boston and the White Sox. I saw Frank Howard hit a terrific home run in Cedar Rapids when he was in the Minors. Then he went on to play for the Senators I think. He was a big man. The ball bat looked like a stick in his hand. Rocky Colavito and Luis Aparichio had the best names in baseball in my opinion.

Picked up WLS Chicago in Whitewood, Saskatchewan. Also listened to play-by-play boxing, or was it wrestling?

I have a 55' military surplus tower (set in a 6'x4'x4' concrete base without guys) that is heavy enough that I can sit on the top and rock back & forth only moving it a couple of inches. I installed it in the 60's so I could pick up a PBS station 40 miles away & behind a hill. I almost started a neighborhood cable company, but Time Warner came along a few years later.

Along with a huge Jerrold TV antenna and a custom UHF antenna cut for the lower portion of the UHF band, I added a 75' long wire from to top of the tower to my barn.

Along with short wave on the long wire, I spent far too many nights using a rotor to null out local stations, watching TV skip, collecting many midwest stations.

The tower is still there & provides over 40 stations in the upstate NY & Canada areas. Unfortunately, digital TV has made watching skip pretty much a thing of the past.

My wife likes to watch Detroit news, for some reason I've never fathomed.

Gosh... I don't know why but this reminds me of when I was a kid. One summer I de-tasseled corn. Anyone who did it as a kid will remember it. It was the only job a 13 year old could get at the time. Fond memories other than the spoiled tuna fish sandwich that caused me to get my butt kicked after throwing up out one of the front bus windows on a hot summer Indiana day.
