Found a pound of sausage in the freezer, and thought of Linda and Steve's biscuits and gravy at the Mississippi rally. I had never made gravy but what the hell, I was inspired. Madeline said it was great. It is amazing what you will try when your bored.

We have even taken to watching You Tube for fun. You need to watch "Pluto Living" but you need to watch from the beginning some of the phrases are tied to earlier videos.

Enjoy

Hi Mr Otter ; glad to hear you are alive , well and cooking
Hopefully come September we will be able to sit down together some morning and enjoy a cup of coffee and a little breakfast
The Mississippi River Rendevous may be our only outing this year so it has taken on a special almost spiritual significance . We have booked our site and now all we can do is wait & pray.
God willing and the river don’t rise , we’ll be there !

Keep yourself and Missouri safe

For us cereals are a casualty of Covid 19
For the last 4 to 6 weeks , the local grocery store has been out of corn flakes , cheerios , bran flakes , cream of wheat , oatmeal , rice krispies , shredded wheat , etc (Not a fan of sugar coated / flavored cereals )
People must be hoarding more than toilet paper ?

Lisa just made a new double batch of granola. It is so much better than anything sold in the store. [emoji4]

Not Cooking, but Planting

I haven't been doing much special cooking-wise, although I did make my first sourdough starter, so we've had some good bread.

But more importantly, we planted our tomatoes and cucumbers this weekend! Those are my favorite things fresh from the garden. We have a terrific fresh market nearby with everything else I need, but there's nothing better than picking a warm tomato and eating it right there in the garden. So about 60 days from now, I'll get to do that.

We always wait until Mother's Day weekend to do that planting, and the weather late last week was perfect. It had been warm for a few days, and then has stayed warm. Not always true in the Seattle area. Hoping we'll gain a few days on the maturation rate.

.

I love sourdough, but have to wonder how this became a thing, like hoarding toilet paper.
And, then it hit me.

But only one of those turns into a good loaf of bread!

I'm still puzzled by the lack of yeast in stores. People who have never made bread are suddenly going to START? Doesn't seem likely.

While we buy yeast several times a year, I don’t think it’s normally that big of an item for sales volume in most stores. I’d say it probably sells more through the winter especially considering holiday baking. If I’m right about this then supplies of yeast probably back to spring and summertime level were quickly depleted when people were forced to stay home by the PANDEMIC and as they watched cooking shows and experienced a cool wet spring day the oven and a loaf of bread and spare time sounded pretty good to a lot of folks. Everyone in my family bakes on occasion but lately I’ve seen baked goods pictures every week on our family message board. So yes, I think all of a sudden people decided to bake something and slow rising shortage was created. YMMV

Our neighbor who has always been a baker is quite frustrated with the baking goods hoarding. She says “Everyone has suddenly gone Little House on the Prairie.”

I finally gave up and purchased a jar of bread machine yeast. They have instructions on the jar on how to use it as regular yeast. Still have not been able to find rye flour...

My personal Spam favorite. I like to top it with salsa - Island/Mexican fusion!

Spam is so versatile. Over the past 10 years or so I’ve pretty much quit putting regular salt on food. I will grind a little sea salt on some things but I usually use Lemon Pepper (there is salt in it Rita says.) but I have developed an affinity for black pepper on a lot of my food. When I was eating some spam a few weeks ago I opened a can of black pepper SPAM. I really like that one. Even better than the jalapeño. Your recipe looks like one that would be good to try.
I might stir in a little corn too.

Spam Escape Rally

Noelia likes when I cook some Spam fries on the griddle, little pieces cut into strips and fried crispy. How about a Spam rally sometime when this mess clears up. Iowa is central to a lot of us and we could plan 3 days off a Spam cook off.......... Also visit the factory, isn't Hormel in Iowa?
