NEJM article gives hope!!
This is NOT a political posting, but is a medical information posting:
This week's new England Journal of Medicine, (one of the most respected publications in the medical field) has an article giving us some much-needed hope:
Please check it out: Here is the gist of the article:
"Dr. Fauci concedes coronavirus death rate like 'very bad flu'.....
Co-authors medical journal article: 'considerably less than 0.1%'....."

I went to the “ actual - real “ NEJM website and read the article mentioned - Dr Fauci
I stand behind my comments in Post # 4
Please Fred for everyone’s sake —Give it a rest
Those of us that are also on the FGRV forum have already gone down this road with you and it led to nothing helpful or productive.

I changed HollyBee's link to the NEJM article. Deleted the posts critical of the original source.
I have NOT read the article. Keep in mind it says it's an editorial so it's an opinion.

I'm trying to grasp these rules about political posts
As I look thru this thread - apparently political statements are acceptable within someone's signature?
Previous someone made a blatantly political claim that the CDC had been grossly over-hired before our pandemic and when I asked for data to back that it, it was then my question that caused the thread to be closed, not the political post itself. (And no, mine was not an attack of any kind - it was a simple ask for data to back up the political claim)
Seems to be quite a moving target....

Hey Alf - we'll ask Dave about "targets" and I'll bet we can get about 12 different stories! -- Keep well!

I've tried to access the aforementioned editorial several times using the link provided - without success. The recurring message is: "This page is having a problem loading...."
I then went to the NEJM site, chose "current issue" (March 26), then "Editorials
Covid-19 — Navigating the Uncharted" by A.S. Fauci, H.C. Lane, and R.R. Redfield. Then copied the link: https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMe2002387
Still not loading. Perhaps too many of us are trying to access the site all at once? Either way, opinions, however knowledgeable, are still only that at this point. [ Just before submitting this reply, I tried again. No dice.]
From another article published this week entitled "Defining the Epidemiology of Covid-19 — Studies Needed" Fortunately, the numbers of detected cases outside China remain manageable for public health authorities.... https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMp2002125
Manageable? While that statement may have been true at the time it was written, the U.S. now has the highest number of RECORDED cases with hospitals struggling for beds and basic supplies - and we haven't yet reached our peak.
https://www.worldometers.info/corona...us-has-spread/
I'm chomping at the bit to head out in my new 17B, but I'd like to have a much better (and larger) picture before making any decisions. Whatever others choose to do, my own plan is to continue isolating until at least two weeks after the number of cases begins to drop, (thereby allowing for the incubation period), because I don't want to endanger myself or others. Once our local governments begin lifting the "stay at home" orders, we'll all have that decision to make, and I pray that we all choose wisely, based on whatever the situation warrants at that time. This new virus may be no more serious than the flu, but we know far less about it. Just my humble opinion …. Remembering Sergeant Phil Esterhaus from Hill Street Blues, "Y'all be careful out there!"

I'm a primary care physician who is actually dealing with this stuff. I agree with the gist of the editorial (which is NOT an opinion piece, but rather a synthesis of hard data - limited as it may be - to date). Still, even assuming that the case fatality rate is well under 1%, by now I trust you all know that it's still a huge absolute number, and getting exponentially larger virtually by the day. Please take it seriously. Please stay home.

Of all the things the US government has asked it's citizens to do in the past, this is by far the easiest. Ask those that were state-side in WWII. Food rationing, food vouchers, scrap metal drives, etc. etc. They were trying to win a war and survive. You're not STUCK at home, you're SAFE at home. One word can change your attitude and one cough can change your life.
Be well, be safe.

I have both Chrome and Firefox browsers on my laptop, if something won't open on one, I launch the other and usually the page will open on it.
