Hi Alf
Back in my collegiate days I used to play a lot of “500” in the dormitory. Once in a while you would get a strange hand with three or four aces, three or four Kings and a couple queens. And you had first bid. Then it was time to declare “ 10 No Trump.” It felt good to just flip them over and listen to the other team call you a couple names and your partner would say “That’s my partner.” That feeling came to me yesterday. Haven’t played 500 in over 50 years. See you in September, fingers crossed. If not before.

May I remind you all that you were not the only ones in the war and, in fact, were late to enter the war.

WWII? If so, Erik Larson 's The Splendid And The Vile is very insightful as to why the U.S. allowed Britain to get pummeled for years before finally getting involved.

None the less both Canadians and Americans paid a huge price in lost lives in horrible ways. I'm glad to see in recent years what seems like more acknowledgement by the general population of the terrible price paid in the defense of democracy.

I've had the privilege of working, up to last year, with one Canadian who flew extraordinary missions, was shot down and bail out or crash landed 3 times but served to the end. Many military honors, including a DFC and quite recently the Legion of Honor from France. A quiet unassuming man who never talked much about the war. He died this year, one of the few of his generation still living. I wish more people knew of the heroism of our veterans. Most can't even begin to comprehend what they experienced.

Ross and others:
Generally I do not wear a mask while driving around town. Until one day.... there were road construction detours and the routing brought me past a downtown soup kitchen. Along the sidwalk there were a dozen people outside waiting for the kitchen to open up for lunch. All were smoking. As I drove passed them, my cab started reeking of cigarette smoke. This made me realized that I wasn't so isolated and secure inside my car. If cig smoke could enter my cab's air column, then surely so could viruses .... (perhaps hitch hiking viruses on the smoke particles). I now when driving in urban areas put my ac on recirculate and pull on my mask. Its my belief that every little bit might help.

I'm old enough that I really do not want to have covid-19!

Sorry this took me a couple months to see and respond to Ross's post. Now that so many areas are spiking in infections this fall, I hope this post will help someone(s) keep healthy. Good luck everyone!

Tom

Lots of folks are spooky and rightfully so. I realized today that I had not left our property in a week. Rita went a couple places, I took the tractor to the top of the hill (300 feet) to put out the garbage and get the mail.

The Toyota dealership is sending me notices that I’m overdue for service. Of course their prompt is my previous service dates and mileages. I’m only about halfway to needing service that otherwise would have happened about the middle of September.

Not spending much cash or buying any candy when I go to the gas station. Hope BP can stand the losses from no business from me.

We'll make it up for you, we're shopping for a 'new' car, at least once we narrow down what we want... currently test driving 2010-2012 Lexus LS 460's, goal is to replace my wife's 1994 Mercedes E320 wagon, which has 280,000 miles and is starting to show signs of age and wear.
