12 Volt Hairdryer

Not sure if this is the right place to post, but I am looking for any information on a 12 volt hairdryer that actually works when boondocking in an Escape trailer without a generator. Thanks!

Re: 12 Volt Hairdryer

This link to the fiberglass rv forum might help you out.

My immediate thought is that you are going to drain your battery pretty fast. But
I have a brushcut.

Re: 12 Volt Hairdryer

Thanks Ron - you've answered my question through the link you posted.

Hairdryer + dry camping = portable generator

Now, I'll have to research 1000 and 2000 watt generators - imagine it will take a 2000 watt genny.

Re: 12 Volt Hairdryer

I have a honda 1000 watt inverter generator, and it handles most jobs just fine.
67 DB sound level, you can talk to another person a few feet away with out any problem.
15 to 20 yards and you can hardly hear it.
I only dry camp.
cheers Geo

Re: 12 Volt Hairdryer

Thanks, Geo. We dry camp only as well.

Checking the Honda generator site a normal hair dryer (1600 watts) needs 1900 to start and 1800 to run a hair dryer. That means a 2000 watt generator to me. That's $1100 or more to blow dry my wifes hair. Not going to happen. Looks like a walk to the restroom and plug into 110. Works for me (I'm bald)!

She's supposed to curl up on the dock at the edge of the lake and let the morning sun and warming breeze dry her hair naturally, while eating probiotic yurts.

Re: 12 Volt Hairdryer

The problem with most 12v hair dryers is that they are pretty low wattage, at least compared to 120v ones. They will take much longer to dry, if they do at all.

Here is a review of one at Amazon. At 12 amps, this works out to 12 X 12 or 144 watts, or about 1/10th of a standard AC dryer. Still enough to kill your battery if used too long, but not enough to dry efficiently.

There are higher wattage 12v dryers available, however they require a high current connection; they will not work plugged into a standard 12v receptacle, and will kill your battery faster.

Re: 12 Volt Hairdryer

Everyone just needs a haircut like mine. Towel it off, wait 30 secs, completely dry.
May not be everyone's idea of good fashion though.

Somehow camping and a hair dryer seems wrong is so many ways For me, it rates right up there with camping and vacuum cleaners . I always have a ball cap in the trailer. Not that I wear it much, but it's there if necessary.

I don't know if they're still available, but years ago there were butane-powered hair dryers. If you really need one for off-grid camping, you may wish to Google....

Re: 12 Volt Hairdryer

We keep a 12V vac in the trailer, really comes in handy. Great for in the car too.

Re: 12 Volt Hairdryer

After reading a similar thread, I gave up on the idea of a 12 volt hair dryer.

But I asked for, and did get this, for Christmas.

I really like it. Gets that stubborn dirt that sits between the screen door track and the entry door.

Re: 12 Volt Hairdryer

Yes, the vacuum is very handy when my wife's husband tracks things in. How about the rechargeable unit? Recharges when home and plugged in, or on the grid at a campground, but cordless/battery powered when dry/off grid. Works for us. Just have to use it so often. Keeping it plugged in all the time, and never using it ruins the battery : - ( Off grid, forget the hair dryer unless you've got the generator, it takes FOREVER to dry with a 12V job.

I'd be keeping that messy fellow out of your trailer, if I was you, Dan.

I compared the cordless to the 12V one I bought when we were looking. The one I bought had a fair bit more suction, but at the expense of being cordless, as it must be plugged in to a 12V outlet to work.
