If you know what to look for it becomes pretty obvious. I remember a few years ago I bought an Android tablet on Amazon, based mainly on all the 5 star reviews. It was a complete piece of garbage, perhaps the worst electronic device I've ever seen. From that moment on I've taken many Amazon reviews with a grain of salt.

I typically make my Amazon purchases based on the "1 star" reviews and pay little attention to the reviews lavishing praise on an item. If I see the same negative comments repeatedly I do not buy the item. Even so, there are IDIOTS who will write a bad review because "it didn't fit in the space where I wanted to put it" or "I expected it to come with a carrying case." Sometimes the description even states there is no case or case is available separately. Duh!

I usually look for specifics in reviews. For a sewing machine I'd look for "tension" to see if people reported problems. For a cordless appliance, "Battery life" and "Fire" and "Overheating." (You can search reviews.) The worst reviews: "It looks good but I haven't used it yet." (Though the dumb sellers ask for those- they send a request for a review before the item arrives.)

NBC posted a pretty interesting article about the Amazon hack on Tuesday: Amazon's Third-Party Sellers Get Ripped Off By Hackers - NBC News
