CB Radio

Hi. Wondering if anyone uses a CB Radio when traveling. Might help if out of cell range. Pros/Cons? Thanks.

I've used CB radios since the "10-4 good buddy" days but many years ago now I noticed less and less chatter while on the highway.

I think lots of truckers still have them but their usage is down with the other types of communication now available.

When I got my new truck last year I didn't even bother running the antenna wire etc.

In Baja I use a GMRS handheld to keep in touch with others travelling in the same area.

Since my brother-in-law and I used CBs in the 70s...we decided to install a CB in each of our trucks on our 2017 trip across Canada. They worked great as nobody else uses them anymore.

I have an old CB mounted inside of the center console of my truck. It sees limited use, and the antenna sits on the rear floor in the cab. I do find it useful while pulling the Escape, usually figuring out which lane to be in during congestion, road construction, or after an accident. The truckers typically help each other The rest of the time it is off, the typical chatter on there is awful!

I have an old handheld CB/weather radio stashed in the tow vehicle. I sometimes use it for a weather report. Occasionally I will use it when a friend and I are using separate vehicles to travel somewhere. but mostly it stays in the console.

We used them in the 90s on Boy Scout high adventure trips to keep in communication while on the road. Our troop was Troop 29 so we monitored channel 29. I have a pretty good pair of handhelds but rarely use them. I’ve used radio communication a lot over the years but cell phones have largely replaced them.
Used to know the whole ten code and the Forest Service Four code but when you don’t use it you lose it.
Iowa Dave will be 10-10

I, along with a bunch of friends, had a CB radio in the 70's. Benny the Bear (a nickname I used to have back then derived from a puppet on a TV kid's show) was my handle. They were fun and handy back then. With cell phones alone now, there is not really any need for one. We too have the walkie talkies we use for communicating to another trailer travelling with us.

Since having that first one, and before cell phones, I thought of getting one, but that would be unlikely to happen now.

Talking CBs

WE carry an emergency CB in a small case, incl an antenna w magnetic base + a 12v cigar lighter adapter.. for emergencies. With WAZE and other GPS apps the CBs are nearly passe'..but it seems right to us to carry one as a spare method of comms. ..lots of cells are kaput out there while traveling and at many campgrounds. BTW we use 2 Cobra walkie-talkies for use while backing into a campsite or while hiking...easier than yelling or cussing. ;-)

The hosts at the Imperial Dam LTVA monitor channel 12. A call to them results in a response from the Yuma Proving Grounds in 8 minutes - calling 911 results in over an hour for a response from Yuma or El Centro.
