Cookware Questions

My wife and I will be picking up our new 5.0TA in 3 weeks. We are considering a Magma Nesting Cookware set and see they are offered in regular Stainless Steel and Stainless Steel with Ceramica Nonstick. We are kind of leaning towards the regular Stainless Steel for health issues and durability but have concerns about it being hard to clean. Is regular Stainless Steel a pain to keep clean?

Give me your thoughts on ceramic coated cookware that would be used both inside the trailer as well as on the campfire. Is it durable enough? Is it safe?

Thanks,
Mark

I have their regular stainless & have no problems cleaning them. As to ceramic, I have a couple of ceramic coated frying pans at home (not Magma) and they stain, although they have held up well...

We have the coated set, and added the sauté pan to it. We have been using them for 2 years now, and love them. No staining at all. They are quick and easy to clean, that is for sure. I have used uncoated in the past too, and unless you burn something on badly, they usually clean up fine.

What health issues are there from the Ceramica coating? I had heard of the potential from Teflon, but only if abused. This is not a worry at all for me, I heard that my beer and ice cream diet is not the healthiest too.

Thanks for the responses!

I don't know if there are health issues with ceramic (seems like I ready something somewhere). I did read about potential health issues with Teflon, aluminum, etcetera. Heck, there are even supposed health issues with cast iron which we use all the time here at home. I am sure one could find health issues with anything, but I will take my chances with ice cream!

I have the stainless steel non coated and have had no issues, just soak or pour water in while hot and the pan wipes clean.

SS uncoated here, which is what the head cook wanted. We also added an extra lid and colander. Only issue is due to the quality (better then what we have at home) the 11 pc stacked set is fairly heavy. We do carry and use a large non stick non Magma fry pan.

Bob, where do you store your Magma set in the 5.0TA?

Thanks,
Mark

Under the stove, we have no oven. They would fit in the cabinet on the other side of the aisle too. I c an try there if you want to know for as a sure thing.

Mark,
I replied to your PM on this subject but don't know if you got it. Yes, we like the Magma set, ours is the SS, and it's been very easy to clean.

Bob, we have the oven so it can't go there. I want to keep it low if possible and want to make sure I have a good place for it before we order. If you don't mind checking the other side, that would be great and appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark

We picked up a Stansport stainless nesting set. Pretty happy with it so far, stores nicely. But I have been doing more cooking outside on a griddle as of late.

I might point out that aluminum is lighter weight than stainless. Yes, there have been allegations of health issues with aluminum, but years of drinking beer from cans hasn't yet made me brain dead. And really, the majority of Escape owners are not......, well, spring chickens and I don't think aluminum cookware will send any of us to the loony bin or an early grave. So I will continue to use my aluminum nested cookware set, drink beer even if it comes from aluminum cans. I just have to find an aluminum ice cream bowl.

Oh, and I shoul add, the aluminum cookware is used very little. My RVing attitude is "If I can't grill it and it needs to be cooked, then I'm not going to eat it." That includes meat, vegetables, breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

I have a slider there so you'll have even more room, fits easily. The cabinet is something like 24" deep.

i was going to argue that we easily get by with a sauce pan and a 12" frying pan .... i couldn't argue the value of a good wok

I like the idea of a good Wok too - gotta get one now. For other cookware I went to Goodwill and Value Village and found some stainless steel Paul Revere stuff in good shape; a couple fry pans and a couple sauce pans all for about $20. It's light, cleans up well and if I happen to lose one no big deal.
