Dogs and screen door

There is a company called Super Screen which makes an excellent and extremely durable screen. Closed in my back deck with the stuff more than 8 years ago and still holding up well.

Lots of great ideas. I'm not so worried about them destroying the door or trying to bust out - they are pretty well mannered. But I can see the lower screen getting stretched or damaged by their noses. They are an extremely nosey bunch of terriers.

I've seen stencil designs on the lower screens so the critters know the screen in there. Once they're trained, they shouldn't try and break out. Our 3 terriers don't.

I think you'd have to take the old one to a screen shop (or pictures of the edges) and get their opinion. It's replacement part is a pre-loaded casette - I'll take a look at my spare I bought from the manufacturer (wifey wants to do some stencils on it.) Actually, when the critters crash into the screen, it pops the bottom off the track instead of damaging the mesh.


I bought the spare just in case the original ever gets damaged.

In software parlance: when we first got our 2016 E21 I thought the retractable screen door was a cool "feature".... Now I think it is just a "bug". Replaced the screen once due to our two dachshunds. Will probably have to replace again at some point as it just doesn't hold up well to kids, dogs and adults who continue to walk into it.

We have added some stencils but still hard to see at night. I also cut up some spare peg-board material I had to place in front of the screen on the inside to keep our rovers from sticking their noses out.

I have thought about removing the retractable screen after it wears out and then getting some screen material and hanging it from the privacy curtain rail. Not as good of an "insect" seal but may work ok.

Has anyone tried installing a more traditional "swing out" screen door on the classic escapes? It seems like it would be tough as you'd have to deal with the main door gasket at floor level and then be short and narrow enough to swing out between the side and top opening. Probably why ETI went with the retractable in the first place

Your idea of a privacy curtain makes me wonder about the screens you can get for your home slider that hang and reconnect in the middle with magnets after you pass through them. Has anyone seen those for RV doors?

Yes I have and if I can’t get this sliding screen door fixed will give it a try . Not very expensive

Great Idea! You could then get a tight seal on the sides and have the magnets hold the middle.

Yeah, my Cardigan Welsh Corgi Sadie has a best friend who is a Pembroke Welsh corgi. When we go over there Reggie barks at the magnetic screen door until she's nearly there and then deftly opens it and rushes out!

Glenn took care of that from the start . We have a wooden baby gate I got from a garage sale $2.00 , cut in half , hinged it and it is attached . It swings out of the waywhen not needed and I made straps to hold it out of the way . Pat

I agree that it would not be hard for a dog to figure out how to go through the magnet screen. But, when they do, they won't destroy it and the bugs will still be outside. Dog training will have to take care of keeping the dogs inside.

I basically start from the moment I get the dog, and insist it not go through a doorway without permission. Handy in a lot of cases, not just for the trailer.

It is a natural instinct for your dog to protect you when someone approaches your door . Pat

So is urination and defecation but my pups learned restraint there too.

I’m sorry our pups learned that a long time ago . They even tell us when they need to go . But our pups will protect us with their life if they need to and we wouldn’t want to change that. Our pups are inside dogs and very well mannered . They were easier to train then kids . Pat
