Dometic Penguin a/c with generator
Has anyone had the chance to operate the newer a/c model with the ''soft start" while on a 2000 watt generator? I have a Yamaha model and would like to know if I need to order the smaller Coleman polar cub model which is an option.
Thanks

Re: Dometic Penguin a/c with generator
I tested the Penguin 600312.331C with a Honda 2K recently. It worked fine for the 45 minutes I ran it. The ambient temp was about 80 degrees. I had to start the fan, pause, and then start the compressor. On a Kill-a-watt, it was drawing nearly 1500 watts. It was necessary to turn off the Honda's eco mode setting for better performance.

Re: Dometic Penguin a/c with generator
I ordered the smaller Coleman Polar Cub 9200 a/c with heat strip- cost extra but I have owned other rv's with the Polar Cub and really like the unit and my 2000 watt Yamaha operates it easily.

Re: Dometic Penguin a/c with generator
I believe it is the Dometic Penguin w/o heat strip.

Re: Dometic Penguin a/c with generator
The Penguin is designed for a heat strip to be added. The mode switch has a HEAT position, ready to go. I believe the part costs about $59.

Re: Dometic Penguin a/c with generator
Emac,
One more thing I should add, even though you can install a heat strip in the Penguin, we found our small cube heater is much quieter and more user friendly. We used the heat strip all the time in our last trailer but decided not to get one for the Escape.

Re: Dometic Penguin a/c with generator
Someone told us to get a little electric heater with a thermostat. We did but when we plugged it in, there was a horrific smell which immediately filled the trailer. Brought another little heater to the trailer. Took the first one home and tried it there. Barely any smell at all. Took it back to the trailer and switched them because the thermostat is an excellent feature. The smell was just an initial use problem that I think Sandra also mentioned having.

Re: Dometic Penguin a/c with generator
The heater fumes were from the heater in the trailer. I took it back to the factory as I was staying nearby, and they "burned it off" for me. I have not had a problem since!
