How many people are having trouble or getting errors from their surge protector? Is this a rare occurrence or are other people having this issue?



What are the error codes people are seeing?

So far the only error codes I have seen since 2011 are low voltage & reversed polarity. Both are fairly rare, but I have seen them more than once & further checking indicated that the EMS was producing correct information.

This is our third EMS and none have given us any problems.

We didn't need one until we came back to the campground and our converter was toast. Talked to others there and the one's who had protectors had no problems but the rest of us had various ruined appliances. Our weekend was ruined. We were lucky it didn't happen on a long camping trip

Just like insurance, you really hope you never need to use the EMS.

You will get a card with the error codes and meanings which I put near the display.
This is from their website:
E 0 - Normal Operating Condition
E 1 - Reverse Polarity (hot and neutral wires reversed)
E 2 - Open Ground (no ground wire connection)
E 3 - Line 1 High Voltage (line voltage above 132V)
E 4 - Line 1 Low Voltage (line voltage below 104V)
E 5*- Line 2 Voltage High (Line voltage above 132V)
E 6*- Line 2 Voltage Low (Line voltage below 104V)
E 7 - Line Frequency High (line frequency above 69Hz)
E 8 - Line Frequency Low (line frequency below 51Hz)
E 9 - Data Link Down (call technical support)
E 10 - Replace Surge Protector Module (call Progressive
Industries Tech Support)
*note 5&6 applicable only to 50 amp set up

The faults we have gotten are E3 (high voltage ) and E4 (low voltage )
My Fluke meter showed neither condition was present at the time the EMS showed fault
Is there a way to widen the voltage perimeters or increase the time delay for the unit to respond ?

Only had one low voltage at COE park. Guys came right over and replaced breaker, and it was fine the rest of the stay.

I've never had any issues with mine. It's tripped multiple times, but for legitimate reasons. Once for swapped neutral/hot at someone's house, and several times for low voltage. The low voltage in particular seems to happen more during heat waves. In one case it actually tripped and registered 70V on input after a windstorm. Low enough to potentially damage the AC, I'd imagine, and possibly even the converter.

For newer folks like me, it seems this discussion is about the Progressive Industries EMS-HW30C electrical Management System (EMS) <www.progressiveindustries.net>. I believe this is the model that ETI installs as an option (currently $400 CDN). Yes?

I note that this EMS has two built-in time delays, 15 seconds or 136 seconds, that activate if AC power in interrupted or the EMS detects a fault condition. The longer delay is for use with air conditioners that don't have a built-in time delay.

Does anyone know whether the currently-installed air conditioner installed by ETI has a built-in time delay? And whether the EMSs installed by ETI are set for 15 or 136 seconds?

Progressive Industries also manufactures a portable EMS with similar features, the EMS-PT30X. No installation hassles but easy to forget or have walk away.

Currently, the EMS-HW30C sells for $218 USD at bestconverter.com and $258 USD on Amazon.

ETI has traditionally installed the HW30C EMS with the jumper pulled within the unit which means it has the 136 second delay. This was required as the Dometic air conditioners don’t have an internal time delay for compressor protection. Fast forward to the use of the digital thermostats (both the white 1st generation and newer black capacitive touch versions). These thermostats have a 2 minute compressor time delay feature built in. One can confirm in their manual. I suspect ETI still pulls the jumper but actually doesn’t have to now. Best to check with them. I have a custom mini-split A/C which has its own compressor protection and I also installed my own EMS and left the jumper installed. It is nice to have power to the trailer after only 15 seconds.

So Dave that is the reason it takes so long for compressor to start ? Pat

Yes, so when you initially plug in or have a reason for the EMS to shut down you are going to wait 2 minutes, 16 secs. for the EMS to reset and allow power to the trailer and then wait another 2 minutes for the thermostat to allow the compressor to start. You can shave off two minutes if the jumper is installed in the EMS. For those that don't have the jumper because ETI removed it you would need to call Progressive Industries to see if they would send you one.
