Everyone can certainly use whatever social media they choose. The EscapeForum is one form. But it's also exclusive because it's brandcentric. Remember, even if you have a Facebook account no one says you ever have to post anything, just like here. You can use it to read only...

That's what mine WAS for. Then I started logging in to check on bands/sports/brands and it recommended my female (married) next door neighbor as a "friend". We had never made contact on social media or email before.
It was too intrusive for me. I closed my account via jumping through their hoops and never looked back.

You didn't have your profile screwed down tight. I've been using Facebook for 10 years and I never get those wacky recommendations and I never worry about my account being cloned. No one can see my friends list... outside of mutual friends. When the door is left open, someone is going to walk through. Would happen at your house too....

Please don’t blame the victim.
Instead, you could offer specific suggestions to keep Facebook from abusing individual’s private information. Not everyone is computer savvy enough to keep everything locked very tight.

It's like the UserCP here at the EscapeForum. But at Facebook it's in the "Settings" within your profile. Look at each and every setting. For instance, no one can see my friends list but me. But the best thing a person can do, is NOT use your real full name. Just like here, I don't use my full name there either. AND use a free throw away email address. Be very careful about business pages and public pages that you 'like.' Read all that you want, it's the 'likes' that are tracked.
Everyone knows there's no real privacy anymore. Whether you have a cellphone, use the internet or drive a motor vehicle. Anyone have On Star? Or use a loyalty card at the grocery store? I live in a cul-de-sac. My neighbors have one camera aimed at the corner of their house. When I come home from a trip, I get an email from them saying "welcome home." They're camping in Arizona and I'm in Oregon. We chat about the weather. They know more about what I'm doing than my family because they can watch me. Now image how many cameras you drive past, not even counting the Red Light cameras.
On Facebook there's a bunch of games. There are those that say they're data mining. Let 'em. I answer every question... with a lie. I've been born in every month, nearly every day, my first pet was a cat (I've never had a cat) and my favorite pet's name was not my pet, and on and on. Screw with them. No one says you need to be factual. They're called 'Games' for a reason. HA
I joined Facebook 10 years ago, because it was easier for my daughter to post the family doin's there rather than sending out a bunch of emails to other family and friends. And I don't want my young granddaughters to think this grandma is a technology luddite.

I don't for one minute believe the user accessible settings are enough to "screw down tight" my profile. Those are there to make people who don't know any better, feel safe. Talk to someone in IT or Tech Crimes.
I decided to delete my earlier post as it was off topic but now the topic title has been changed, so I'll post again to the comment.
FB and online data is under attack way more than my home. So I don't understand that comparison.. if you believe you are safe from data breaches, selling of your data/info, pages you visit, links your click, while on FB, you are sadly mistaken.
As for my home, I leave my windows open all the time, often don't lock the door, feel safe and have never been broken into. No one has walked through my house door unless they have been invited in.

If you left facebook logged in last time you visited it to check up on said grandkids, every website you visit that has that (F) icon is tracking you, and adding to FB's knowlege base of your habits and preferences. Same with Twitter-err-X, same with all the rest of them.

No Worries!
The ability to choose what we 'join' on the interweb, for whatever reasons, is a wonderful thing.
Given the rather limited ability to view content as non-members (totally understandable, IMO), we who choose not to join FB have no basis to complain about what we may miss as a result of that choice.
IF FB members want to share content with non-FB members on this forum, they'll post the pertinent content here rather than (or in addition to) a link to FB.
Just sayin' .....

I 100% agree with this and told Grant he should add to his post here on the EscapeForum.
The wonders of the WWW is we get to decide what we want to read and where we want to visit. I find people fear what they don't understand. It's easy to close one tab and open a new one, that's starts everything from scratch. One of the great things for me is having an MS in Technology from CalState. That's a better education than... I heard...

I suspect that is some benefit, even if perhaps a bit of double-edged sword!
I also suspect that for many folks the deciding factor about what they join / don't join on the interweb has little to do with understanding technological capabilities but has much to do with a 'trust factor' regarding the entities implementing those technologies (the entities running the websites).
That 'trust factor' is a highly personal judgement, and like many 'trust' decisions in life may or may not be founded 100% in a fact-basis (quite often one cannot know 100% of the pertinent facts, regardless of technology education).
So it goes, IMO it's great to have the choices!

Boy isn't that the truth. I think back to my relationship with my own Grandparents when I was a child. They lived on the west coast, I lived on the east coast. Photography was expensive and so were long distance calls. They received school pictures and often pictures taken during one or two holidays. I only remember talking to them on the phone a couple of times. I get to see pics of my grands every single day! And the only cost for the phone calls is just the monthly bill because there isn't any long distance cost. We really don't know how well we've got it unless we stop and remember....
Have a great day!

One step forward, TWO steps backwards.
It's a confusing world. We humans are hominid, monkey like creatures, but with car keys and thermonuclear weapons.
I'm not sure we can behave well enough, having either.
Facebook is just another tool, or terror. I don't mess with it either.
