Flooding in Southern Alberta

There is a lot of flooding happening in many parts of Southern Alberta at the moment. One of the rivers in that area that I frequently paddle at water levels near 35 cu-m/s is now flowing at 3500 cu-m/s. I am hoping that those members of the Escape community that are living in these regions will not be impacted too severely. Get those lightweight fibreglass trailers to high ground folks or they will float away!

There are lots of evacuated neighbourhoods in Calgary, and towns in Southern Alberta. The water levels are extrememley high. Highwy 1, the Trans Canada Highway, is washed out at Canmore, near Banff, leaving many stranded. The closest alternate route would add about 4 hours or so to the drive, if they are even open. This creek is one that you walk through in normal conditions, and not get your knees wet.

Thanks Jim for the pics and links, we've been watching CBC NN this morning, hope you're up high from the Bow and Elbow. My brother in law has been evacuated from their home right behind the CBC building. Meanwhile my sister watches from afar, she just started her job a week ago with UofC in Doha Qatar.

We were in Radium and not planning to return to Calgary till today , but with all the rain decided we'd leave a day early . Learned over breakfast that Trans Canada just closed so came home over the Crowsnest , saw lots of washout's there too , but we were lucky . All the rivers are dark brown and just roaring .

We dodged a bullet as well. We camped in the Castle Mountain campground prior to attending the rally and drove to Osoyoos using Hwy. 93 from Castle Junction to Radium. Just heard that highway is now closed and there has been flooding and washouts in various places along that route. WHEW !!

Maybe Reace should offer an option for an outboard motor mount.

That is what you are supposed to use your "bike rack ready" hitch for.

They closed that yesterday morning while we were in the Aquacourt for one last soak before driving home . There are several slide areas on that route through the Kootenay Park that would easily cause issues with so much rain . The parking lot at the hot springs was loaded with vehicles - stopped from going through . There had been reports that the Crowsnest had only one lane open ,but both were passable when we went through the Sparwood area ( lots of traffic ) , but there were still some slightly flooded spots . Anyone looking to go east would likely get through , report reads the same today as when we drove through . At Nanton we were
detoured east toward Vulcan ,then north, then west again toward HighRiver - then north on # 2.....that was slow , but safe .

We were in Banff last weekend and Jasper next weekend, looking like some good fortune with our scheduling. We were in Banff 7 or 8 years ago on fathers day weekend and woke up to about a foot of heavy wet snow and the Trans Canada was washed out by Canmore and had to take the old highway home. That was a very slow trip home. Very thankful to not be in the middle of that this time .

Our mayor did an interview with CNN, who thought for certain shelters would be overwhelmed, but in fact there was so many unaffected by the floods offering assistance and a place to stay, that the shelters housed very few.

We went out to our rec land today which is on a small river to see how much land we lost, and if we lost any buildings. Fortunately we lost only about 20' of treed land along about 1/4 mile of the river. It was up very high, and caused a fair bit of destruction. Lots of big trees floating by.

Here are a couple quick cell phone shots. I got some on my dSLR, but need to download them.

I'm one of the folks stranded in Canmore. Was supposed to be leaving for home on Thursday. No word yet on when the highway will reopen.
