Re: Hobbies?

If you are near a lake with a beach, I am thinking kites. You know, stunt kites and such. Most fun is flying those you built yourself! I should pick this hobby up again, did this all the time when back in Germany... :

Re: Hobbies?

I've been building super-detailed plastic models for years. Its easy to pack a model (easy there...we're talking about 1/35 scale plastic models here!), an exacto knife, and a tube or two of superglue and have something to whittle on during rainy days. Of course, the airbrushing and detail painting have to wait until I'm home.

I agree with Jim, photography is an ideal hobby for trailer camping. It is compact, environmentally friendly, fits together with other activities, helps you to see the beauty around you. Baglo claims this photo is not him, but I'm not so sure.

Re: Hobbies?

mushroom hunting and bird watching - both get you out and about, and both require little gear (a book each and a serious sense of adventure for one, plus an ability to follow taxonomy keys. Binoculars can be used for both). The former provides an opportunity to augment meals in a tasty fashion. The latter is just dang fun.

And, yes Jim, both can be combined with photography.

Re: Hobbies?

Yeah, but the photos won't be anywhere near as colourful as things are when you eat those mushrooms.

I like to do both too.

Re: Hobbies?

What?, you live in the Bay Area and you can't find any mushrooms? They were in plentiful supply back in the late 60s when I was there.

Re: Hobbies?

Golf. You'd be surprised how many courses are very close to campgrounds. Not too compact, but I always have room for two bags in the tow vehicle. While travelling, you get to try different courses for variety.

Re: Hobbies?

On FiberglassRV there's a big forum dedicated to Hobbies and Crafts. Many of which are done while camping. Viewing the topics may give you some ideas: http://www.fiberglassrv.com/forums/f83/

Re: Hobbies?

One thing that you can do at campsites that you can't in cities or suburbs is astronomy. I have a 3.5" Newtonian which fits nicely into a small suitcase. One can use a camera tripod or the small tripod that came with the telescope.

The reason you need a remote area to view is light pollution near cities is terrible. When was the last time you saw the Milky Way? If you are young, you probably never saw it.

Even a good pair of binoculars will allow some fun observations, but you need a steady hand.

Re: Hobbies?

Of course, the main driver behind getting our trailer is sheep herding. Radar and I have earned the first level of herding title from the Canadian Kennel Club, and I hope to do much better in 2011. That means weekends of training in Laidlaw and Cobble Hill, BC, and weekends of trials there and other places. Most of the farms where we do this set aside a field for participants to camp.

This is the level we are at:

Not bad for a city dog with one year training about once a week. Not great, either.
