Home safely but almost lost the trailer

Having to return to Canada well before our planned April 17 date was a bummer. Arrived home to -10C and fresh snow but 58 km. from home jacknifed the trailer on the freeway in very icy conditions. Ended up facing the wrong way blocking both lanes but fortunately no traffic coming. Simply drove on the shoulder back to the entry ramp we'd just come on. I cannot see a scratch on the trailer but the corner at the belly band hit rear window frame and window shattered.

We crawled the rest of the way to the border and was never so glad to see Canada. Now on 14 day self isolation which we'd planned but the border guard told us we had to and handed out a pamphlet.

Hey Pops
You’re getting a little old for spinning donuts. Maybe you’ll re-letter the trailer name to “Ice Escapades.” And your new theme song will be Slip Slidin’ Away. Glad to hear you’re ok and that your washing machine is working. Better talk to the Man a little longer tonight.

Wheel side down!!!

Hi: emers382... Glad you all ended right side up. A broken window is small potatos compared to how bad it could have been. 14 day Ice-o-lation is OK... as long as you don't go "Stair" crazy!!! Alf

So glad you and Beth are safe. Was speed a factor or just ice or both. They say most accidents happen close to home, tired and anxious, judgement fog, but again so glad to hear everything is fine, just some bruises to the Escape. Enjoy your quarantine, Noelia and myself are starting our second week, no end can be foreseen.

Jim it was not a speed factor. I was already crawling along with straddling the right icy stretch (caused by truck traffic) with right tires on nearly clear shoulder. I had exited freeway for a few miles to take a parallel road into a town, then back onto I29 was going down ramp without accelerating, lane was initially clear then hit the first patch of ice and don't know what happened but suddenly lost it even in 4wd and having snow tires. Highway was icy account blowing snow across the road on this very open prairie.

Glad we have a 5.0TA as it could have been different scenario with a 19 or 21. I had already had one scare with veering into left lane so I certainly was taking it easy. Three long days home from GA wish we could still be there and on to FL next week but certainly glad to be home despite being back to winter.

Glad to hear that you are safe and the damage was minimal. Now it's time to hunker down with Netflix, Hulu or whatever streaming service you have. The good ole interwebs can keep you connected. Stay safe, be happy and most of all be healthy.

We had the same conditions yesterday. Left Sioux Falls in morning with rain any by Fargo had winds of 60 to 100k and ice covered road and blowing snow. Crawled along at 70k or less and still had several instances of sliding. Glad for the 5.0, would hate to be towing a trailer in those conditions.. glad you are ok.

So I take it you had no trailer. Did you see the big fifth wheel and the small motorhome in the ditch or did those happen after you passed by? It was at Drayton this happened, I took exit 184 into town just to get off I29 for a bit then entered again at 187 where I spun. Thinking about it, I was probably doing 50-60kph but there's a curve there. Had a very friendly sheriff's deputy came and took photos and gave us his card in case we have any issues with MPI

Like you we were towing the 5.0. We saw several card towing trailers that were having problems with the high winds but the 5.0 really handles them great. Did not see the incident at Drayton but there were several cars in ditch between Morris and Winnipeg. Nice to be back home but really missing the warm weather. I guess Escape will have to either postpone or cancel the rally. Like you we are in isolation but I have a heated shop so I can keep busy with projects.

Hi: GimliGuy... Glad you got back safe. Hope you pass your Ice-o-lation test. My eldest bro. was stationed at Gimli when the base was in operation. Alf
