Glen and Rosemary,
We have just started doing home exchanges but closer to home as our dog is coming to. Have 2 set up for Oregon and one for Victoria this year.
The folks in Victoria seem to have lots of offers and have been to several places in Europe and also have one set up for a month in Australia. Lots of people seem to have second homes so often do non simultaneous and like you we are using our travel trailer to accomodate this.
We are using -
www.homeexchange.com
Good luck.

Thanks Kootenaigirl. Good information - we like the idea of exchange rather than renting; then hopefully you have people taking as good care of your place as you would take care of theirs.

Jim,

I just sent them a message through the website and referenced your referral. Guess I can't be accused of rushing into things. Thanks again.

Thanks for the update Glenn. I have a feeling this has the possibility of being a win-win.

Housesitter Found

We thought we'd furnish feedback on our search for a housesitter. After looking at the sites recommended on this thread and doing some independent research, we opened an account on TrustedHousesitters, put a listing together and then, surprisingly, had a fairly robust response. We had a few people in mind but dithered a bit in getting things together. The result was that our first three choices took other assignments while we were ruminating. Fortunately, another, later-filed couple from Calgary responded and seem to be an excellent choice. So we've passed the first hurdle in this process and we'll find out later if our decision was a wise one. Fingers crossed. Thanks again for everyone's comments.

As insurance issues, i do have some feed back on. We owned a cabin, well as big as a lot of houses with all utilities. I always thought that when you were not there for more then a few days you would have to shut down all the utilities. This became a pain in the summer season because we would be there every week. So i checked with my agent and he said so long as someone was there at least once in month you would be covered for any losses. So that is what we did in season. However in the winter we shut it down accept for the lights in case we would have to go up in the dark. Carl

Check your insurance policy. We had the same belief (need to have somebody in every week or so). Dug the insurance policy out last week and found the clause that stated we weren't covered if the property was vacant for more than a week. But then we also found the definition of "vacant" -- it is defined as the time between purchase and moving in, or moving out and selling. The property is not "vacant" if you're on vacation, no matter for how long. As far as we can tell reading our policy, there's no issue with not having the placed checked while we're gone.
