So here's a question that surfaced in my brain as I was watching the Texas weather report tonight. How do you protect the solar during a hail storm when you are traveling and can't get it under cover.
In 2001 we had a spring hail storm here in New York and it put 400 dents in our 2000 Dodge Neon and about 200 in our Aliner Alite camper that we had at the time.
Jake the top surface of the panel is tempered glass which is very strong, the same as side or door in your vehicle. If that breaks in a hail storm it will be the least of your worries.
I've seen hail damage the surface enough that it blocks that area from getting excited. Depending on the construction of the panel it may just lower output slightly or shut it down. You could keep a small plastic tarp and pull it over with ropes to keep abrasion down? A flat panel is vulnerable ..
PGDriver, good to know, Temperd glass is pretty tough. See this will be my frist experience with solar, so as I was watching the news on the tornados and hail in Texas I had one of those Ah-Hah! Moments. Thank you for clarifying that for me.
You gotta get under an overpass and stop or some such if bad hail. Car and gel coat will take a beating long before a problem to the solar panel.
Anyone ever see an Airstream that has been in a good hailstorm? Quite a sight.
