Colorado Parks and Wildlife has announced that they’ve officially acquired more than 19,000 acres of natural space for a new state park. Featuring a towering landmark dubbed ‘Fishers Peak,’ the space is slated to become the 42nd state park in the state, with the formal purchase of the land being one of the final hurdles to make the dream a reality.”

No new camping.

At least not yet.

This current announcement is interesting news to me. There was a big expansion on the Park System and Conservation Areas in BC during the 90's. Some of that increase came from redesignated Crown (state) land and vehicular access and camping was then restricted or prohibited (unfortunate in some cases but understandable).

I know neighbouring Alberta announced the de listing of a number of Parks, some with CGs, and access to both sides of the Rocky Mtn slopes have been tightened over the years, as I think it has in the USA. Add to that the decline and deactivation of resource roads and I'd say it is all these new "overlanders" who are the ones that missed the boat !

Now, if it's on a website somewhere - and it likely is -, it's probably going to be busy, official CG or not. The only solution I see is a lot of driving to get away from populations and shoulder season camping.

Got to admit tho, coming from a slide in camper and having a future trailer direct us into campgrounds more is going to be a big change for us . But if you don't do it now, when ya gonna do it ??

On Vancouver Island 3 parks are getting updates but only 1 park (Loveland Bay) is getting additional campsites.

I actually emailed the CEO of a company that markets peoples RV's for rent. I told him that most campers already have an RV. We really need somewhere to stay. I suggested this exact idea. People that have a driveway or somewhere to park over night can make a buck and we end up with somewhere to stay.

The pandemic has turned the world upside down. Due to homeschooling and work-from-anywhere culture, I don't see anything going back to normal and getting back to spontaneous travel without reservations anytime soon... or maybe years.

RV manufacturers are getting smart and building to appeal to that target. I saw Airstream has a new floor plan for the Flying Cloud that includes an office: https://www.airstream.com/blog/intro...ce-floor-plan/

And Nissan just announced their new 'office pod.' While they're not planning to build an RV using these components, it sounds like they're going to make the parts available for DIYers: https://www.cnn.com/style/article/ni...pod/index.html

Will other manufacturers be close behind?

Hope they figured out how to make the A/C quiet. I still see two Dometic jet engines on the roof. Guess you could always turn off the A/C when making calls but that’s kind of ridiculous in a trailer starting at $107K!

Sounds like BC has got their act together. NM State parks recently added a new one. Previously it was open camping, no fee, pit toilet, pack-in/pack-out. The pack-out part was ignored and it became a mess. Fees will be used to pick up the trash and check tags. Sites are reservation only and were getting booked up 6 months in advance.

It is really going to hurt when you're moving from one spot to another.

I am an Okie that migrated to MT 20 years ago. CGs and roads here are now full of out of state license plates. We just camp out our back door.

On a positive note, schools are transitioning back to the classroom environment. That should ease some of the pressure on campgrounds.

Maybe this isn't so bad after all.

1. It keeps people away from some parks and relieves some pressure. People that can do with this approach are not competing with me (as much).

2. Most or all of Glenn's parks listed in his report were Canadian. The U.S. may be a different story. i have perpetually said Colorado needs way more camping. My home area, Boulder, mostly has camping up high in the mountains and limited at that. Most other camping (canyons) was shut down long ago. Very little outside of town too.

3. As the new viral case load decreases, more people will choose other activities. some will find out they don't like camping and some will just sell their rigs. Many will just go back to what they were doing.

4. Until then it may be better to aim for recreational areas that offer non designated camping. There are still lots of national forest access areas to find.

Stay safe out there everyone!

I seem to recall that Michigan has closed several state forest CGs in the past couple of years for lack of funding. Opponents of this move point out that CG fees are being lost, too, from the closures. One would think that the high demand for campsites would suggest reopening them when the current scare subsides, but who knows if they will do so.

Should we invest?

My wife and I are about to pull the trigger and put a deposit down on an Escape... we are retiring and have dreamed of traveling around the country. Is it a pipedream or should we invest in a camper with the hopes of finding places to stay along the way?

Some California State Parks are making more campsites available.

We share the same pipe dream.

First ten trips were too good to be true.

Next ten should be better.

Camp on, my friends!

You're near a lot if cool areas! Not that far from you is Crawford Bay, B.C. I went to a family reunion in 1976 and visited Wedgewood Manor nearby. Built at turn of last Century by a Wedgewood China heir at a cost of $400K as they transported 400 miles from Vancouver 100% knotless cedar to build it.
Took Susan there in 1990 and it was about the same then...low key. Now it is more commercial, yet hopefully still relatively the same:

It's a wonderful dream, don't let all this talk scare you. Things have changed recently from the carefree rv travel a lot of us were used to experiencing. You might just have to plan ahead a little more and maybe in a few years it will all get closer to normal.

scottarue, I hope my post earlier hasn't added undue concern for you.

I can only speak about my own country but allow me a few comments fwiw...

For sure I've seen more folks out camping and road travelling over the past 4 decades. IMO the number one factor has already been mentioned - population increase. That's not something that looks to change in the near future so best to plan for it and use your freedom of retirement advantage for travel.

The small truck camper we have has often helped keep us out of CGs but there are usually other people around wherever we go. That's only gotten worse thanks to social media, blogs etc. and the increase in outdoor activity and toys. And I say worse for us but probably better for them

Size matters for both travel and comfort. Most slide in campers are small inside. The bigger ones outside are often limited to CGs and larger dually trucks. They're not for everyone.

Best to consider and research all RV types and apply a firm, 'know thyself' when appraising their suitability and affordability.

Whether you want to do a deposit on any type as a "placeholder" is up to you.

No one knows what's around the corner. I say, follow your dreams, you've worked for them. If need be, you will adapt. And it will be worth it !
