Insurance - question and comment

Question: With my 21 soon to be ready, I called Good Sam about insurance. While I have another insurance company for everything else, they have always been my RV insurer, as well as emergency road service. They gave me a quote, but it seems high. @$850 a year with $500 deductable. This was for full replacement, personal property, etc. But it was mainly comprehensive and collision. Certainly for a motorized RV or a car, but do I need that for a trailer? What do most people do?

Comment: After a friend had a minor heart attack when we were attending a conference years ago, and I found how difficult it was to manage things when far from home, I enrolled in a medical evacuation plan. I pay $220 for replacement, contents ( $5,000 personal property ) etc. Deductible is $250.
You best get a quote from HUB International and compare as I am in B.C. so liability is under another policy ( $90, which includes license ). Be worth the effort though.

I Have Safeco Insurance on my tow vehicle. They added the Escape to the tow vehicle insurance with a $1,000 Deductible for $178.00 a year. Coverage is for Comprehensive, Collision and Replacement.

Our trailer insurance, grouped with our auto insurance, is very similar to this in coverage and price...but we have zero deductible as it was only 2 or 3 dollars more.

One question I was asked, which may impact your quote, is where the trailer is kept. I think it helps if it is kept at your home.

Thanks. It will be kept at home. I think they were quoting as if it were a motor vehicle; i will check with my regular insurance. My tow vehicle is less. I thought it seemed wrong! So I take it there is no worry about collision, that would come under the tow vehicle?

Talk to the agent and get a couple quotes. You'll likely get a better deal from the company you use for home and auto.

You have to really double check that they are quoting you for a towable trailer...not a motor vehicle of the same name...Ford Escape. Even when we had our Scamp they had to be careful not to list it as a Plymouth Scamp!

My former Ins Co. (21st Century) wanted $400/yr for full trailer insurance. I went to AARP/Hartford and got the same insurance for half the price. If you're 50 or older (and live in the U.S.) you can sign up with AARP and avail yourself of this deal. They gave a better price for our car insurance, too.

I hear that you can open your own paper recycling business if you join AARP.

But, if you get a quote, you can then take it to your existing carrier and ask them to compete.

For our new 21, to be picked up this Friday, we chose Pemco. We live in Washington State and they also insure our house and autos. Our policy covers Collision ($500 deductible) and Comprehensive ($200 deductible). All internal items (tow vehicle and trailer) are covered by our home insurance. Our yearly premium went up by $92.94. I asked if there was a need for special insurance for an RV and they said that if it was a motorized RV there would be other coverages necessary, but not a camping trailer. Hope everything's OK??

When things are really low priced I get worried. Sounds like you may be as well. It is so hard to compare insurance rates as they vary around the country. I think you should read the policy carefully when you receive it, if they do not send one because you are modifying your old one, ask for one.

Something I have added for a minor fee is roadside assistance, I already have it on my TV but if something happens to it I would have to pay for towing on the trailer. Also can come in handy changing a tire along side the interstate.

Insuring my Escape with the same carrier as my house and vehicles cost an extra $336 per year.

Sounds about right compared to what we were paying for our 17 also in WA.

Taking your suggestions, my regular insurance carrier quoted me less than $225 with good coverage and low deductables. I've got everything with them and a sterling driving record so I'm happy. I gave Good Sam another chance and never even heard back from them. I wouldn't be without their emergency road service and travel medical but was sure disappointed in their trailer quote!

Thanks for everyone's input. You saved me enough for more options on the Escape. Or, well, about 1/3 of the sales tax for Governor Brown. Sigh.

We added insurance for our 25ft trailer it costs us $24.00 a year.

Full replacement? What are the deductibles? Third-party liability? A lot of questions that can only be answered by reading the policy. To make a comparison, you need the details.

We pay about $250 for full replacement coverage for our trailer.
