I've got gas

If you're coming to Canada ( Vancouver in particular ) be aware that regular unleaded cost $5.50 CAD per US gallon today. Gas Buddy forecasts that it will rise to $5.85 this summer.
I'd fill up before crossing the border.

Why so high, is that all taxes? That's double what I'm paying on this trip.

High when compared to the USA -- Low when compared to Europe.
The USA is considering a hike in the fuel tax to fund road repairs and infrastructure improvements
A lot of things cost more in Canada then the USA but going to Canada is money well spent. IMHO !!

Hi: gbaglo... Hope you're feeling better. Gas can be so uncomfortable!!!
On our "South bound odyssey" the lowest priced gas we got was US$2.17 a US gallon in Alabama. Should have stayed right there. Alf

Gaming the system

Hi Alf
When we come to the falls we come up through Michigan and cross into Canada on the blue water bridge at Sarnia. After watching an old Seinfeld rerun I am currently saving all of my nickel deposit cans here in Iowa. I'm gonna bag them up and cash them in when I get to Michigan for a dime a can. I've adapted a large box on the Escape to haul cans when the interior gets full. I'll fill a few collapsible bladders with gasoline once I empty the cans and put them in the empty box. If I gas the Highlader before I cross and refill the Highlander out of the bladders once I get to the falls I think I can drive all over Ontario for free. What could possibly go wrong?

I wouldn't worry too much about the gas costs. Enjoy your visit to Canada! From GasBuddy.com just now:

Average Regular Gas Price By Canadian Province ($Cdn/Liter)
Saskatchewan $1.069
Manitoba $1.099
Alberta $1.112
New Brunswick $1.172
Nova Scotia $1.184
PEI $1.196
Northwest Territories $1.219
Ontario $1.234
Newfoundland $1.253
Quebec $1.276
British Columbia $1.343

The average cost in $Cdn/liter across Canada is $1.20Cdn/Liter, which is approximately $3.69USD/gal at todays exchange rate.

Oh I WILL. I'm budgeting about $2500 in fuel for 6,000 miles. Half of those miles will be in Canada. Maybe I'll just cut back on the Poutine stops.

Also take note that Vancouver fuel prices are quite a lot higher than the Canadian average (about $1.42/Liter in Vancouver compared to $1.20/Liter Canadian average). Just avoid Vancouver if coming to Canada and you should be fine!

You do save 10 cents a liter if you avoid metro Vancouver. Gas sold in Chilliwack doesn't include the 10 cent/liter transit tax.

All taxes, no. Much of the difference between provinces is due to differences in taxation, but not all of it.

B.C. gasoline taxes are higher than most provinces, and notably higher than adjacent Alberta. The Vancouver area has the additional transit tax which was already mentioned, raising the price there above the rest of B.C. Other variations within B.C. are due to non-tax factors mostly involving product transportation; the Kamloops area is typically near Alberta prices.

Whenever I filled up at the Costco in Bellingham, WA I waited in line behind SUVs whose owners also filled up several red plastic gas cans. Surprisingly the plastic can people all had Canadian license plates. I was also dismayed at how high the gas prices in WA were compared to my home state of Colorado.
