We are offering what support we can which I suppose always seems like all we are doing is standing around with our hands on our hips. Noelia appreciates the fact that this group is concerned about Jim. He appreciates it as well. He is a tough nut. If anyone can pull through this, Jim will.

Sorry to hear Jim has encountered complications. We’ve camped with Jim numerous times and always had fun sharing food and stories. Since Jim attended Parsons college in Iowa in the late 60s, it’s my job to give him an update on the small town eateries he loves so much and remembers as a high point in his time in Fairfield.

Like all of us I’m hoping for a recovery and the upcoming camping seasons.

Parsons College aka "Flunk-Out U" had a terrible reputation. Perhaps it wasn't all deserved but the college really got hammered after that famous 1966 Life Magazine expose'. In order to right an institution that was already in serious financial trouble they hired a my childhood friend's father a respected historian who already had a cushy job at the Univ. of MIami. Parsons College made him an offer he couldn't refuse - President of the college at 4x the salary he was getting at UM plus all kinds of other perks including this incredible house. He resigned nearly 3 months into his tenure and they move back to Miami where he became a Provost in the Dade County Community College system.

I've teased Jim a couple of times about whether or not he practices Transcendental Meditation and is follower of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

Parsons

Hi Richard
Parsons didn’t have the best reputation for a long time and eventually lost their north central accreditation. Then a few years later the Maharishi folks took over and have it now. I asked Jim once if he ever tried the meditation and levitation they claimed. I was looking at the back of his pants and when he noticed me he wanted to know what I was looking at. “Just trying to see if you’ve worn the rear end of your pants out trying to fly” He laughed that Jim Norman laugh and told me another lie errr story.
Hoping we can all make some more camping memories with Jim.

Nice image. Meditation wasn't in it for Jim.

Got a Parsons story for Jim.

My old college roomie flunked out freshman year, went home, had to find a job, ended up working on the line at the Ford Factory in Metuchen, NJ. A couple years of that was enough to wake his sorry, party-guy arse up to reality.

He tried to get back to school. But our old school wouldn't take him back. Only place that would take him was Iowa's Parsons. He went, he graduated, and the rest is history. He's now a retired and beloved math teacher.

A Jim Norman Update

The latest news is encouraging. Yesterday Jim went through a 3 hour operation and following that procedure had another 5 hour operation which ended at around 8pm. Noelia got a phone call from him (I'm not exactly sure when) in which he said, "Get me the hell out of here!"

Without going into the particulars (which I am highly likely to get all wrong), Jim incurred life threatening complications from the Whipple procedure performed several month ago. The term "Compassionate Care" was part of the conversation during this current crisis. That is about as serious as it gets.
