Defenders have also been passenger car tires from Michelin... I found those to be hard riding, noisy, and not very sticky, but they lasted a long long time. On my cars, I generally prefer the 'grand touring' style tires that get good but not amazing mileage, and have good but not amazing traction, and where quiet smooth ride is a priority. A few years ago, that was the Michelin Primacy, but they've changed things all up again, and I have zero experience with the new Michelin models.
My tow vehicles are 4x4 trucks, and on those, I like to put All Terrain tires, specifically BF Goodrich A/T KO2. These ride well on pavement, are NOT very noisy or rough, last a long time, and have quite good dirt traction.
