Locks for propane tanks, batteries and spare tire
Hi all,
I'll be picking up my 17B in mid-March. It will be stored in a secure storage facility. For the trailer itself I've got a coupler lock from Proven Industries so I'm good there.
However, I was thinking about securing the propane tanks, batteries and spare tire from walking off in the storage area. Not that anybody would....just thought I'd keep everyone honest.
Any thoughts on securing one or all three of these items? Thanks!

Meh? Remove or secure anything you want to keep.
Coupler lock is a deterrent. A dear friend had her brand new trailer taken from a secured facility. Secured means it has a fence around it...anyone who has the entry code can enter. Surveillance tapes are usually bad quality to start with and get recorded over within a specified time frame. Find out the time frame and conduct checks on it accordingly.
"Not that anyone would".... heh heh. Don't give them the opportunity!
Hub locks for the trailer tires AND spare....key AT home or in main vehicle.
Battery removed and trickle charged at home

Chains and padlocks should work for the tanks and perhaps for the spare tire. I've considered securing my tanks that way but haven't done it yet.

I don't bother myself, but found that you can run the safety chains through the propane tank handles and padlock them.

Nice idea, makes it a tad harder to run off with the trailer by using the chains as a tow method.

Another member, GregA, used battery locks that look like they will deter those looking for an easy target, but like any lock could always be cut...

Hi all.
I had a special aluminum battery box for my batteries on the tongue of my 2005 17 B.Lockable.Plastic coated steel cable with good lock on propane tanks. One morning in a State Park I found the lid on my propane tank cover was open. Also had steel covered cable on spare tire with a good lock.Have lost batteries out of parked cars while working in Vancouver.Going to lock up tanks on my new 21, same on spare wheel.Have California Immobilizer on one rear wheel while parked in backyard behind locked gate with CCTV.No, I am not that paranoid but we had a burglar in the house while we were gone to the gym for little over an hour last year.We were down close to $ 10.000 CDN.Cameras around the house now.
I do not like to make it easy for the bad guys. at least trying to slow them down.Eight months later Vancouver Police called and said they had found some of my wifes plastic cards in East Vancouver. Her purse was gone also.We live in a good neighbourhood but we get visits from across the inlet.
Stuff happens, anything to harden the targets helps, just to slow the bad guys down.Don't worry, be happy.Yeah, but prevention would slow down a lot of bad guys
Allan.

Locking the safety chains to the propane tanks is a great idea. And the battery straps with locks also. As for the spare tire.....does anyone use a wheel lock lug nut?

Just this past weekend we were traveling through East Texas and stopped at a small gas station with a Whataburger next to it. We got gat, parked in an open space out front and went in to get a quick breakfast sandwich. We were back out in 5 minutes or less and the rear door on my truck camper shell was open where someone had looked in the back [ it was empty that day] Also the cover off of the propane tanks was gone! I can only assume that if we had been inside a couple more minutes, the propane tanks would have been gone also. I will be getting a cable and heavy padlock.

I think a 357 would do the trick,

Before we built our storage building we kept the Escape at a nearby storage facility inside its own 12 X 30
Stall. All locked up with a heavy duty lock. Cameras in and out, code to enter was recorded each time in and out. Big fence. Lots of trailers outside, many worth more than the Escape. Worked well at $80 per month. Owning the building is better than a stack of receipts.

Gotta slow them down and good cable or chain and a hard to access lock don't hurt. I've never had that experience and don't want to either. Seems scary because we often eat in the camper parked near a fast food place. Somebody who prys the door open could get hurt but that don't go through those tweakers fried brains

Texas license plates help. Makes thieves wonder if it's worth it.
When I went the pick up the Escape in Chilliwack, the Canadian Border Services officer kept asking me if I had weapons, had I ever carried weapons in my vehicle, did I have a concealed carry license, etc. I thought I would never get through. I'm guessing that she had a list of my registered weapons.
Seems that Texans have a reputation (probably well deserved) of being more than likely armed. We actually are not even in the top 10 list.
1) Wyoming: 195.7 firearms per 1,000 people.
2) District of Columbia: 66.4 firearms per 1,000 people.
3) Arkansas: 41.6 firearms per 1,000 people.
4) New Mexico: 40.5 firearms per 1,000 people.
5) Virginia: 30.1 firearms per 1,000 people.
6) Idaho: 24.2 firearms per 1,000 people.
7) Alabama: 20 firearms per 1,000 people.
8) Nevada: 19.5 firearms per 1,000 people.
9) Alaska: 15.2 firearms per 1,000 people.
10) Louisiana: 15.1 firearms per 1,000 people.
Thieves should actually be really scared if the trailer is from Wyoming.

tdf-texas,
You can store such things at IGA Bromleys in Sumas about 300 yards before you cross the border.

The Canadian and American border guards have a job to do. They have information on you via your passport etc. I've had decent conversations with them keeping my answers to a minimum, listening closely to the questions asked and being honest at all times with my answers. That said, I've had the Escape inspected a couple of times, lost my declared potatoes and always thanked them for the job they are doing. Never hurts to be courteous.

When you return to the U.S. they'll be looking for poutine.

They weigh me on a cattle scale in and out. I'm hauling a lot more than Poutine after I leave Betty's at Niagara Falls Ontario.

Canadian border guard: "Do you have any guns with you?"
Me: "No."
BG: "Do you have any guns at home?"
Me: "No."
BG: "But you're from Florida! You MUST have guns at home!"

Same line, insert Iowa. We hunted bear in Ontario in 2010, they know, its on the screen. Still, not a problem.
