More Changes at Escape

Had lots of time on my hands so I was checking out the Escape website and came across some new things.
1) They show a financing option for U.S. buyers ( Canadian coming soon )
2) They are listing an extended warranty. 5 years coverage ( no specific price, but it does say usually under $4,500 Canadian.
With all the discussion about pricing in U.S.$ / Canadian$ I found these new options interesting.
Personally I would never finance anything non essential! But it is a nice option for some.
Extended warranty ?
I don't think so. I'll fix it myself. With the help of all of you!

Some people like a turnkey operation, how much per month and add in the warranty to my payments. No worries for 5 years........

Like you we wouldn’t finance a luxury item, but nice there is an option there as it’s hard to get loans on RVs.
Extended warranty on TowV might make some sense, but wouldn’t want it on the trailer.

Extended warranty is how the seller makes more money. If they had to pay out more than they take in, they wouldn't offer it.
Take the money you would spend on extended warranty, put it in an account and pay yourself.

These "warranties" are actually insurance, and sometimes advertised as such. As with any insurance, the idea is not to reduce the product buyer's cost, but to replace a significant risk of a large expense with the certainty of an acceptable premium. If you're concerned about a fault costing many thousands of dollars that you would not be able to pay for, it can make sense, because that reserve account won't be big enough to handle everything that could go wrong.

Similarly, you don't need life insurance, and can just put the money you would spend on life insurance into an account which will pay your beneficiaries... and just hope that it has enough money in it when you die to support your dependents.

When I was having issues with my fridge ( ten years old and never serviced ), I got a quote for a new one. It was about $1,200 installed, which is a lot less than $4,500. I opted to have the fridge serviced and repaired for about $500. Only other issue was furnace motor which was replaced under Dometic's warranty, just as it would be if you bought the extended warranty. I don't see how you could have enough go wrong to warrant the warranty.

I've seen several studies that all basically say the same thing: an extended warranty is almost never a good idea, and on average the consumer loses money on the deal.

But there is a refund feature if no claims are filed, something like 25% if my memory serves me right

If you don't buy the extended warranty and don't file a claim you get 100% back.

When you bought an Escape from Tammy and Reace it came with an extended warranty for free, heck Reace fixed the thermostat in my 2005 17B in 2010 and never asked for a penny. Come to think of it, it was him that told me there was a problem with them.

When I went to the rally in 2016, I was in Osoyoos 5 days early. Two years earlier, when doing my build sheet in 2014, I failed to include a toilet shut off valve. So I did ask if it could be installed at the rally so I wouldn’t have to tow an additional 3 hours west to Chilliwack, and Reace told me it wouldn’t be a problem. When Tammy arrived at the NK’ Mip campground on Wednesday, I and a few other early arrivers walked over and helped her unload and set up. I wasn’t “home” on Saturday when Reace stopped by and installed it, but when I asked Tammy for the bill she refused to charge me. That went beyond an extended warranty in my opinion. And at a later date when I was doing an inside mod and could not find matching screw caps (the butterscotch colored ones), I called ETI and Tammy happened to answer. I asked to purchase a few and she told me “forget it, I’ll drop some in the mail for you today.” While I understand their need to move on, I wish Tammy and Reace were still involved in the everyday operation of ETI. Hard to find anyone nicer than them. But I did meet Karl at the 2019 rally and found him very personable also. And in January, we went to the Florida RV Super Show in Tampa, I met much of the crew of Northern Lite, including the head man. He was impressed that I was wearing an Escape Trailer hat. He had nothing but good things to say about Reace and Tammy. Small world, it is!
