Thanks - I just ordered a small one to try out. Used to have a solar oven, but it was way too big to be portable. Gave it away.

Will do. There are a number of youtube vids on this particular oven, if you want to call it that. It's more like a cooking tube. I figure it's big enough for just one person, and I'm not much of a cook anyway, so will probably use it for the kind of stuff one would use for foil cooking in the fire - basic and simple. I do wish I could figure out how to make creme brulee when out camping. I could use my firestarter for a torch, I guess.

It's perfectly dishwasher safe if you're the dishwasher. But who has a "real" dishwasher out in the boonies?

As for the soup, if you buy one of these, you can ditch the can opener and the cans and make the trailer that much lighter. The little one only weighs a little over a pound, IIRC.

At $65 and free shipping, I don't figure it hurts to experiment. My big solar oven cost $300 years ago and I never used it once. I'm a big proponent of solar, but also of portability, and it was just too big. When you're home, you can open that can of soup and who needs solar ovens?

Well, I just assumed he was talking about eating it cold, since I've done that before when I was too lazy to warm it up. You could wrap it up in foil and leave it on your car windshield in the sun and get the same effect as warming it on the stove, but it would take a lot longer.

Actually, I bought the sun thing because I like new techie stuff, and it was lots cheaper than a new computer or camera.

Glenn is just jerking you around. I think solar stuff is neat. Other than some lights in my yard, I don't have anything solar, but like to read about it and especially from folks that are in the testing stage.

Will your oven heat Vienna Sausage and beans (which is a step above Glenn's meal of Cambell's Chunky Beef soup)

Living in Moab, that thing is guaranteed to work. I remember frying eggs on sandstone at Dead Horse Point some years ago.

Yeah, I don't see how it can replace a grill for things like burgers and steaks Bruce. Wrong shape.

What I found cool about this new design, especially the GoSun Mini Kit, is it's portability. At less than 2 pounds it can go anywhere. No, it's not going to replace a BBQ or the 3 burner stove top in an Escape trailer but it will store in a back pack on a hiking trip or a bike ride where-by my Weber, sadly, has to stay in camp with my trailer. Solar cooking is not for everyone, especially those that find it difficult or confusing. I used to find the office photocopier difficult to use...compared to carbon paper.

So having spent some time looking around the 'net.... it does brown foods if one leaves the cooking tray ajar from the tube (steam escapes).

I could probably get used to cutting meat into pieces that would fit onto the tray. No hot dog fan here either Jim.

The C$400+ to get the sport into my hands in Canada is somewhat of a deal breaker, although saving approximately $100 per BBQ season in fuel costs would go a long way to mitigating that upfront cost. With a nod to Glenn, I'll just use up my existing cannisters this year and figure out what to do with 2016.

Hopefully someone brings one to Osoyoos.
