Exclamation New "Standard" Cooktop? (not Suburban SDS-2)

Posting FYI, make of it what you will ....
  • I ordered my 5.0 with the "Standard" cooktop
  • Received my "Final" build pics today and was a bit surprised to see the cooktop that's installed
  • I had no advance notice that it would be anything other than the Suburban SDS-2 that's long been used but has recently earned a bad rap
  • I am not complaining
It's a Dometic D21 SS 2-burner cooktop

Looking at the installation instructions I note it calls for a cutout of 17.875"W x 13.75"D (front-to-back)

The Dickinson 2-burner cutout is 22"W x 12.5"D; the Dickinson flange dimensions are 23"W x 14"D. So, though filler strip may be required for the cutout "D", with luck the Dickinson flange will completely cover it.

Just FYI, and no, I have no idea if what I got is a "new standard cooktop" that ETI will be installing consistently.

Great looking stove and nice grates. I like the way the knobs are recessed to hopefully dodge heat from the burners, so this looks like an improvement to me. My only concern is whether it will work at higher elevations. There are numerous threads elsewhere reporting problems at higher elevations. Some say it works at 10,000 ft and others say they can't light it above 4000 ft. I believe the old model had the same random problems, possibly related to the propane regulator.

Nice that the big burner is away from the wall and I like the style. But it has to work for high level travel as well.
Looks like pan size from 6.25 to 8.5

New "standard" stovetop

It is the new standard stovetop - per ETI

And the 3 burner Enos is an option.

Good news that they've gone away from the unsafe SDS2.

Of course, it would have been nice if they'd posted some info here that they were making the change, but they don't follow this forum.

That's a nice looking unit, heavy duty grate, and it looks like the cover is metal...I was never a big fan of the glass top.

We have the same cooktop in our truck camper and really like it. It is a smoke-glass cover. It’s a little finicky in that you have to lift the glass straight-up to free the hinges from being locked in the open position. Then you close it. Someone unfamiliar with it could easily break it at the hinges.

Sorry, methinks the hinged top is glass (confirmed by Jwinfrey it seems) per close scrutiny of other pics I got.

I'm certainly pleased to not be dealing with the SDS-2 situation right out of the box, and will certainly put this unit to work, but it's very likely I'll be doing a Dickinson mod eventually. Whether the 2-burner cooktop or the Caribbean with oven ala Jim Bennett is TBD after living with things for a season.

It looks like a good design: stainless steel, flush, integral cover (unfortunately glass), well-placed controls, optional cast iron grate looks functional.

The few online reviews on Dometic's own web site are all bad. They're largely about customer service and the wire grate, but a significant repeated issue is that it only works up to 4,500 feet above sea level.

For anyone concerned about burner output, the two burners appear to be rated at 7,200 and 5,200 BTU/hr (2.1 and 1.5 kW).

Our 19 build is still 14 months off but I like this stove better than the current stove. We will likely be doing most of our cooking outside so a pricey upgrade isn't in the plans.

I think the wire grate is on the cheaper model that looks similar.

I guess time will tell on the 4500 foot limit. I can’t understand a cooktop with that limit in a camping trailer. Hopefully it will be a non-issue. (Fingers crossed)

The Dometic web page shows both wire and cast grates; the cast appears to be the more expensive option, for the same model of stove, by about $40. There are apparently glass and metal cover options. There is also supposed to be a choice of ignition, although the choices are not clear.

For a functional stove without being a $500 upgrade the old Atwood 2 burner still performs. Unfortunately it isn't available(Lippert bought/killed products), else ETI may still be providing it. Weird how OEM's sometimes box themselves in with supplier choices and don't try to source elsewhere. An Atwood style still exists under another badge however and we haven't replaced ours as we're not fixing what isn't broke in being able to use a 12" fry pan along with a saucepan or smaller fry pan at the same time. AND it works at 12,000'. This is a current rendition: Flame King- available at Home Depot for $77.

Unfortunately the Flame King is too small for the cutout of the Suburban SDS2. I ordered one a few months ago because I don’t trust the Suburban but can’t use it. I may try and find a cabinet maker that can make a frame for it. Until then I am using my portable induction cooktop with my inverter and my single burner cooktop outside with the ETI installed propane quick connect.

I opted for the Enos over the Dometic, in part, because of the reports of failure to ignite at higher altitude, but mostly because of several reports that Dometic tech support told callers that the altitude limit was in the design.

Hard to believe that an RV stove manufacturer would restrict usage like that, but it was enough for me to choose the Eno.
