New Starlink services
I received an email from Starlink last week…they’re adding additional features to their roaming plan, which includes in-motion use. Anybody else see this? Makes me wonder if a price increase is on the horizon.
Thank you for being a Starlink customer. We are making changes to your service plan to deliver an improved Starlink experience.
Effective immediately, you will have access to the following features with Starlink Roam:
In-Motion Use
International Travel
Coastal Coverage
An updated Terms of Service will go into effect starting 10/10/2024.

There’s a new $50/month plan that includes 50GB of data, in motion.
I couldn’t stomach $150/mo, but I’ll do $50/mo. The new mini dish uses about 1/3 the power too….
So, I don’t think there’s a price increase coming, unless you are based in a congested ( satellite data ) area. I’ve read the sell at a discount to places that don’t use as much satellite internet.

You had me going for a minute because I agree with your comment.
First, Starlink Canada doesn't even seem to list a price for the 50GB bundle and says it's only available in select areas.
It also says that it can't be paused so you're paying for 12 months even if you'll only use it for a fraction of the time.
I like the idea but I'm not there yet to make that kind of hardware/service commitment.

I've been paying $150/mo & got a very similar email. However, my notice included a price increase to $165/mo. Here's the email I received.

Here in the states it’s a month to month that can be stopped and started as needed. From what I saw on the pretty, but nearly useless, Starlink website.
I want to get it before the Alaska trip, so I have some internet through Canada and in Alaska.
Of course, I can find no confirmation on whether or not the service can be paused.

Currently, the way it works is that you can enable and disable the subscription whenever you want to. However, when you enable the subscription, you enable the service from that day until the last day of the billing cycle, and pay the cost for that number of days.
So, if your billing cycle ends on the 15th of a month, and you enable the subscription on the 1st, it will remain enabled until the 15th (if you disable it, it won’t end up disabled until the 16th), and you’ll pay $75. If you open it on the 16, it’ll cost you $150 and will remain open until the 15th of the next month, even if you only needed it for a day.
At least this is how I’ve ended up being charged during my period of using Starlink.
I’m super happy with the system. It really has exceeded my expectations.

Yes, be very careful. Not all the services work the same way. I'm on two Facebook starlink groups and most are NOT happy with the $50/month plan that includes 50GB of data, in motion. Those 50 gigs disappear quickly. IF you need the service, you really, really need to research... especially this 'cheaper' service. AND watch out for the mini dish!

That’s the email I got as well.
FWIW a colleague bought the small dish Starlink so he could “work” while out at his hunting camp. He hasn’t been happy with it. Last year his buddy had the prior gen dish and said they got better performance with it.

I make 10 GB of hotspot data on my cell phone last a week or more, so I think 50 will be close enough for a month.
Not sure what you mean by ‘watch out for the mini dish’. Yeah, it’s not as fast, but the power consumption and size make it attractive to me.

Roam, means it always on? Right? That's where the 50gig gets gobbled.
I'll have to go back and read some more about the Mini, I just remember most were not happy.. was it because it gets hot or was draining their battery too soon.... humm, I'll get back to you.

It does? Then I've been working with the wrong definition. I thought is was like cell phone roam. Something that occurs when the device is used in areas that aren't your primary service area.
Why would it have to be always on if it's not in use?

In motion is now part of Roam. It's designed for people who are on the move, like folks in motorhomes going down the road. People that are in one spot for a while and then move to a new place, can use 'Residential,' just need to drop a new pin on the map.

Yeah, you can use it while moving, but you can also turn it off so no data is used.
Facebook is a huge data hog, and I rarely use it. I like these lightweight websites like this one, or old style Reddit. I’m thinking it will be handy to have some roaming data in Alaska if I feel like I’m on the wrong road….

So I assume you need a different dish for in motion? I admittedly have not researched Starlink in depth. I got it to do what I wanted it to do, followed a couple of security tips and called it good.
I'm also not a Facebook user. I swore off social media back in 2010 when I took a couple of CEs on the impact of social media and an endless news feed on an individuals health. Interesting how the evidence from studies was present back then, but took almost 15 years for it to rise to public awareness.
PSA and my opinion only: Limit social media and news consumption to 30 minutes a day and you will be much happier.

I don't know about the regular full size dish but the mini dish is about the size of a netbook. There's a video of a person driving with the dish sitting on top of the dashboard.
Looks good to me but I don't have all the details. I've seen things before that looked good at first but the devil is in the details.

Some of the previous versions of Starlink hardware don’t work well or at all in motion, from what I’ve read. I think the new releases of hardware work in motion.
Repeating your PSA, hoping it will sink in.
