North Padre Island Camping Report
Bird Island Basin on the Laguna Madre side has been 2/3 full for the past month according to the camp host. So at the present time it offers a place to camp while visiting the Seashore or a place to wait for a site at Malaquite Beach to open. First come, first served only.
Malaquite Beach host told me that for the past month about 7-10 (out of about 50) sites open each day but fill up by mid afternoon. So timing is important but the opportunities are reasonable. FC/FS also.
There are quite a few (maybe 40) RVs on the main beach within the first mile and it thins out from there. Conditions looked good for getting a level area along the dune grass. The park posts warning signs if an exceptional high tide is possible. One of the hosts said that the park has been permissive about letting campers move to the visitor center parking lot overnight if the tide poses a threat. This beach is also a good option, and when the sun is out, the wind is right and the tide is moderate it’s the best boondocking there is.
Nueces County Park at Port Aransas has been full since January. They take reservations. Nueces County Park on N Padre was largely empty. I don’t know why the difference. Both have new full service sites.
Things will likely get busier in March.
