Way to give those would-be thieves the boot!

I don't understand the bear part of your post. Were you threatened? I love seeing bears and all forms of wildlife.

S/B no different than anything else you do at home, at the store, in a parking lot, at the bank, at a restaurant, etc..............

Your #1 "personal safety accessory" is between your ears.

Situational awareness is #1.

Head on a swivel. Don't fall for the con.............

Ok then, to sum up...
Carry everything from a lead pipe to chemical weapons.
Establish a secure campsite perimeter with chimes, extra chairs and large boots.
Fortify your trailer with lights, locks, guard dogs .
Camp only in gated campgrounds.
Never ever boondock.

Is that about it for having a wonderful and relaxing time?

When I was camping at Jasper I asked a park ranger about the risk from bears. He said it was real: another ranger was on a bike ride through the park when a grizzly knocked him off his bike. He could not reach his bear spray because it was in his backpack. What saved his life was the grizzly biting into the backpack and setting off the spray.

The next day I bought my comically large can of bear spray and attached it to my belt. I looked ridiculous but I felt safer.

You left out this one I once read on here-a firm look and a warm smile-

Just because you’ve worked hard for a few nice things and the ability to take some chill time, doesn’t mean the zombies are on board with your plans.

I was told that bears don’t like the smell of Pine Sol cleaner. We simply mix up some in a spray bottle and drench ourselves from head to toe before every hike.

Must work, we have not been eaten so far.

But we seem to have developed rashes over 75% of our bodies.

Since I was born there have only been 5 fatalities in Alberta from bear attacks. As mentioned before I do take caution and stay at a respectable distance if near one in a populated area. Most bear sightings I have had were very brief as they ran at the first sign of humans.

Park employees are rightfully trained to do whatever they can to keep people from the bears that in places near lots of people they are less afraid.

This thread has been a fun read. I have had only one experience with the unexpected late night knock on my trailer door. Not a bear, though. Was at a Flying A in Joplin and we were already bedded down for the night. That person’s voice sounded like my grandmother with her sad story. I advised her to go inside the store and call the police for help. She left. It shook me, though.

I now keep a 1.5 oz spray can of Halt dog repellant and a half inch-thick two foot long piece of re-bar in the trailer. Handy, since you never know what’s out there but maybe I should ramp it up with bear spray.

We took several customer fishing trips in the Sioux Narrows area in Ontario (Yellowbird Lodge). One evening a few of us happened to cross paths with a "very" large bear while walking back from the lodge's clubhouse way too late in the night.

In the morning when we told the owner about it he said that bear was a frequent visitor to their trash area and was "very crabby". He said to bring pots and pans to bang when we went out late like that.

Needless to say, we took the kitchen sink with us and never saw the bear again.

As the saying goes: when hiking in bear country wear bells to make noise, carry pepper spray, and look out for bear spoor. You can tell it's bear spoor because it has little bells in it and smells like pepper.

We all have our cautions. But really I don’t worry about it . I just try to be smart, in camp by dark, skip the big cities if I can . I feel safer boon docking than in a parking lot.

90% of what you worry about never comes to pass.

I spend 60-100 nights a year in a canvas tent some where in WA and never had a problem.
Best sleep I get all year.

I must admit - this thread on personal safety has me worried about personal safety We don't do anything in particular for personal safety. We try to keep our eyes open during the day and closed at night, lock the door and that's about it. No broom, pepper spray, knives or stiletto.

Pretty much like us, although we do need a broom to sweep our outdoor carpet.... but it's little ...
