If you mean the Steal Shield Pat, that's a very high security hitch lock that is hard to defeat - and it covers the entire hitch area which is a big plus. As hitch locks go, that one looks top notch. REALLY hard to find however.

Also the new purchase price protection for 5 years from Geico has my back if someone does indeed get the lock off and steal this camper.

30 seconds with a cutting torch and it would be gone, quietly.

What hitch lock exists that would not suffer the same fate?

My point exactly.
Also like Robert mentioned you just hook the chains to the truck after wrapping them once around the the trailer tongue to shorten them and your good to go fancy/expensive lock and all.
I used to do this with the utility trailer around my property if I didn't have the right size ball.
I just buy a cheap one to discourage lazy thieves and use a heavy cable through the rims, a boot would also work. The harder someone has to work the better the chances are they will fine an easier target.

Cheers

And that's my point exactly. The MegaHitch Lock is beefier than all the competition, making it that much harder for someone to break it. Might deter yet another thief from trying.

I also mentioned I Master Lock the chains with a very thick gauge lock, to make it even less quick (easy) for a thief to get the chains connected to their truck.

My buddy just picked up my boat and trailer, lifting it from under the carport and plunking it down on his crane-equipped flatbed truck.
Easy peasy.
I wasn't home at the time. Neighbours didn't notice anything unusual.

I have a cheap $9 lock on my hitch.

Okay, so moral of the story from the majority here - don't even use a hitch lock because it will only be stolen anyway. Fantastic. /s

Well, my RV battery box locks are working so far. No ones made off with my 6v's yet.

I just use a master lock locking hitch pin on the trailer and keep my insurance current. These trailers are pretty unique and word of a theft goes out the fiberglass community very fast, so I just take basic precautions and don't worry about it too much.

I use a cheap lock to deter opportunists.
That video that was referred to looked like Keystone Kops to me.

I not so sure that is the majority opinion. We all seem to understand that a determined thief will defeat any system.

For my peace of mind due diligence or whatever we should call it I am happy to have the hitch lock and am thinking/planning about buying a California wheel lock.

I hate the feeling I have when we've been away from the trailer for awhile and walk back to the camp site. I check to see if the trailer is still there as I walk through the campground then check to see if it was broken into.

18 years working in corrections can leave a person jaded.

Who says not to use a hitch lock?

As I mentioned before, these things are deterrents. Any deterrent is better than no deterrent at all. Just don't expect iron clad security if a determined thief wants your trailer. In that case, a wheel lock/boot is better.

In over a 25 year span with three different RVs, the only security I have used is trailer insurance.

It could be I am just too trusting, but I can't be bothered worrying too much.

I would bet my 5.0 with the Anderson adapter would make it at least a bit more difficult to steal.

And if you'd have read the link I listed, you'd see the option to allow users to ignore moderators.

It's not a personal issue - it's a technical one.

One thing not discussed so far is how much damage can be done to the trailer by someone trying to defeat a device. Sometimes it is better to leave the door open than to have the door destroyed.

Purchased the California Immobilizer a couple of weeks ago.Trailer is parked in front of our house and sometime some guy unfamiliar to the neighbourhood would stop and ask my wife about the trailer. She was getting nervous that it might get stolen so every evening I ended up parking a car in front of it until I could get that Immobilizer.Had to jack up the rear of the trailer to install it because of the slope. If I hear a saw going in the night I will certainly wake up.We have become a little paranoid around here after a recent burglary, so are looking into installing cameras.36 years in same location but now things are starting to happen around here.
Take care and stay alert.
Allan.
