That's right - in recent years any Suburban with higher GVWR than a 1500 has only been available for commercial customers, for conversion to armored vehicles.

The Silverado/Sierra HD (2500 and 3500) is significantly different from the light-duty Silverado/Sierra (1500), just as a Ford Super Duty is different from an F-150. The SUVs are only offered on the light-duty truck platforms (at both GM and Ford).

I saw four single vehicle accidents within 5 minutes of each other last week on my highway morning commute. The roads were not impassable but conditions were poor.

What's most scary to me are vehicles tailgating with snow and ice on the roads.
It's not difficult to slow down a bit and give some space between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. Riding the bumper isn't going to get anyone anywhere faster.

So right! I drove out to Iowa in Feb.(Father in hostipal). There are many areas(like where all the windmills are, for sure). Where strong crosswinds just blow vehicles sideways, even with just a dusting of snow. Hit one spot(a bit more from drifting snow) & in my Tacoma (with a tall topper, no trailer). I had slowed down to 45, as I HAD my 1980 toy truck & topper blown 90% in a cross wind coming from woods to a big field. Sure enough, coming from under a wide overpass into open. Felt my rear slip in "trying" to blow me sideways. I slowed down to 35, & flashers on. Most people did stay behind, & then we all passed at least 6 vehicles off in the ditches. Mostly taller, bigger(4x4s even) & 1/2 were Mini Vans.

Always slow down for No Wind(woods, under passes) to wind(open fields) & speed(think hydroplaning, is the same with snow). 4x4 is not going to help you there. This is where I feel people towing with smaller lighter vehicles(wheel bases). Should look out more. I have "felt" our Escapes are better in a cross wind. Lower & rounded.

Dave, my two favorites are..."Dumber than a bag of hammers" and... "Drive like hell - you'll get there."

I like both of those too. In the Midwest it’s usually dumber than a box of rocks and “not the sharpest tool in the shed.

ah, looks like after about 2015, the Suburban 2500 became a special version, available only to rental and fleet sales only, and the 3500 was government only. after 2020, they were dropped entirely.

too bad, by all accounts, those had awesome tow capacity.

example, 2010 Suburban 2500 LT1 4x4:
  • Curb Weight: 6550 lbs
  • GVWR 8600 lbs
  • Tow Capacity: 9300 lbs

In this case it might have been a Florida woman driving. I need Tesla-type cameras all around my truck so I can get the whole story without taking my eyes off the road.

GM still builds the Suburban 2500 but only for Federal Govt contracts. None are sold to the public. You might get lucky and pick up one at a Govt auction however.
