The same for me. I was an auto mechanic for 40 years and will only work on my own since I retired.

You really should listen to the program I linked. No profession is safe.
McDonalds is working on robots to take your order, build your burger and sling fries.
Soon after, an engineering firm will be asking, "would you like fries with that"?

Can't wait to see a robot wiring up an actor or actress with a body mike for doing musicals! I suspect my previous profession is good for a couple more years...

“Will always need the engineers“ says rubicon327.
Agreed.
Until someone creates a robot that can dream of what might be, a robot with imagination, there will be a need for creative, innovative engineers, scientists, artists, musicians, architects, builders, on and on and on.

And if, the actor is a robot?
Robots have already invaded film. I figure there hasn't been a decent movie made since Twelve Angry Men. Last movie I saw in a theatre was "There is something about Mary", but there wasn't.
I watch the late local news. They used to open with a wide shot of the floor director cueing the anchor and a cameraman shifting the camera. Cameraman was first to disappear. Now, no floor director; just a robot camera.

Big law firms are already using A.I. for document searches in the discovery phase of lawsuits, in place of hapless first-year associates. And back in 2011 the project manager for IBM's Watson told us that the machine was "ingesting" court documents, presumeably to run parallel mock trials.

My only child (daughter) is 27 y/o and in college. We've had many conversations about the future and jobs. I asked her, what do you think YOUR chosen career will look like in 20-30 years. No one, as far as I know, has a 'working/accurate' Crystal Ball. (If YOU do, send me next week's lottery numbers). She has chosen Language/Speech Pathology and wants to work with pediatric patients. I hope she's wildly successful (whatever that means) and adds value to someone's life. I couldn't wish for more. Proud MOMMY!

Surely you forgot True Grit. Among the finest movies ever made.
Visited Debs Meadow some time back. That’s where the famous ending when The Duke with a 50 shooter in each hand, the reins in his mouth charged across the field shooting up the guys wearing the black hats was filmed. Right here in Colorful Colorado.

If I were starting out today, younger and innocent, I'd learn a trade like plumbing or electrician and then I could make my doctor wait 30 minutes for me to show up!! Even better, how to build and program robots..... Teminator, here we come.

And you probably can pass on that knowledge.
Our local community college hires a lot of part-time (adjunct) professors to teach specialty classes.
A couple of reasons. One, of course, is that they work cheap. Minimal pay, no benefits. But what adjuncts bring to the table is invaluable life experience! Something that your typical community college professor tends to not have.
Our college taught most of the skill trades like A/C, electrical, plumbing, auto mechanics, plus a host of computer related subjects, on and on.
Check with the colleges in your area. Just might need your skill set.
Hey. Any old engineer can still teach the kids how to use a slipstick, right?

Teaching at a community college is what I did for a while after my first retirement (forced at age 50). I was in transportation and was hired to teach a course in that subject without ever having a university degree. I did it for two semesters and likely could have continued had I not returned to university to pursue my second career (pastor).
Now I'm happily retired from both careers and still get the opportunity to guest preach.

I retired at 62, happily. I had mostly enjoyed my job as a CPA/Chartered Accountant. However, I got frustrated with a new control freak boss and no longer enjoyed what I was doing and felt that I had stopped learning, mostly because my boss wasn't;t prepared to properly delegate and be inclusive with staff. Fortunately, I was able to make use of a circumstance that suddenly presented itself to get a severance/early retirement package and never looked back. Although I did some consulting for a while, we decided to buy our first Escape (now into #2) and are so busy with stuff we are into including travelling (including long trips in our Escape 21) that I don't know how I ever had time to go to work full time.

Donna with that career path she will definitely add value to many lives. We are thankful everyday for the teachers and speech therapy professionals that work with our daughter. She has made huge strides with their help.
