Rhubarb index 2020
Not trying to rub it in, really, but it's happy hour in my back yard.

Well, not to brag, but I had a rhubarb crumb coffee cake for breakfast.
Ok, well, last year's rhubarb! But this year's is coming along, and I did have an asparagus omelet with this year's asparagus for dinner.

There was asparagus growing in the garden when we bought our house. We tried to encourage it, and even bought additional plants, but I could never harvest enough at one time, for dinner for two. Got many thin stalks.

It was probably getting too old and crowded- my old patch that came with the house is getting that way but I replanted two and one year ago and am starting to get a lot more.

Just bought eight raspberry plants. I figure I'll have to live to age 132 to get enough fruit to recoup the cost. We had plants that I removed last year in an attempt to rid the garden of morning glory and, because I kept finding cello packs of raspberries in the fridge.

I bought four raspberry plants 3 years ago and got some more (fall bearing) from a friend, and I get a ton starting late July. Fewer off the early ones but this year I pruned them right so we'll see if I do better. None left over to freeze, though. But raspberries never come down in price so worth the hassle.

Cripes! Wear your Haz Mat suit!
Rhubarb leaves are considered poisonous due to the fact that they contain high levels of Oxalic Acid. Oxalic Acid is sometimes called "ethane diacid".
And here you are now, imbibing amongst the "ethane acid" foliage.
Seek shelter now and stay in place, away from the garden.

Oh groan.....I knew I'd see this Rhubarb Index popping up ....was just hoping it wouldn't be until we see ours at least peeking through. I have never seen Rhubarb that huge! I use every bit we get for compote (over ice cream, yogurt ). Wolf loves it over his oatmeal. Can't wait to get out in the garden.

And then the discussion morphs into one of the most amazing nectars known to humans:
Piestengal. Easy to sip, gives superhuman strength ( for a little while) and then sleep sweeps over your horizontal body.

Our rhubarb still has a heavy layer of condensed snowpack on it, but the temps into next week are forecast to be well above freezing every day, so maybe in a month I can share a photo. Well, that is if I haven't started the major landscaping planned for this year, where we will be reshaping and rebuilding a lot of the rear landscape.
Fortunately, we know lots of people with too much rhubarb and can always get it there. I just love eating it in many different dishes.
One of my favourite rhubarb dishes is one my mom always made us. Stewed rhubarb with biscuits baked on top, and an added dollop of vanilla ice cream when serving.

Like Jim no sign of rhubarb here, in fact we had a little fresh snow last night. The only saving grace of this cold early spring for us is that the snow here and in ND and MN is melting slowly enough to make our notoriously flooding Red River rise slower and likely to nowhere near flood stage this year. Some highways in the province have been closed however due to high water and south of us part of I29 was closed this weekend.

Glenn, is that a Canadian refrigerator that grows and boxes raspberries??
My favorite rhubarb is a crisp that has rhubarb, peaches, and berries (black or blue) with an oatmeal brown sugar topping. I'm going to have to start a list of things to bake when supplies/fruit are available. And I am wondering about all our local farmers/orchards who sell at the farmers' market.

Our rhubarb is still buried under a foot of snow. It was -15°C on my drive into work this morning and forecast is for some more snow tomorrow. I don't think that we are going to have a summer this year.

Ouch- oh gosh ...I think you are suggesting Edmontonians are less optimistic than Calgarians - for sure we are still expecting summer ....in fact on Wednesday I plan on scrubbing down our veranda furniture .....and raking any loathsome white( ish) stuff from shaded areas to the sunny areas and talk sweetly to certain patches of mulch to encourage our rhubarb to start up!
