Any glass item carries a similar risk, although failures of the tempered glass Corelle (and Pyrex) are particularly dramatic. The alternatives are presumably plastic or metal plates and bowls.
I'm thinking mainly of outside use- breaking on a gravel campsite surface where it would be hard to remove all the glass shards. It wouldn't be likely to break falling on the floor of the trailer except as you describe.
I use melamine but I don't have a microwave. It isn't supposed to go into the microwave, and obviously neither is metal.
