Screen Door — Grrr!
We hate our retractable screen door - the one that came on our 2012 17B. It’s constantly coming out of its track, getting twisted and turned, and the screen is always popping out too.
We can live with it - it does work (mostly) — but I am curious if any of you have modified your screen with a different model or option, and are happy with the results.
Thanks, Elizabeth

Can’t help you with your screen, sorry you’re having problems. But I will tell you that I love those Griffons. I hunted behind a pair one time. Pointed 25 pheasants in about an hour and a half. Lifetime memory.

Ha! We sometimes say that our pup is half Griff, half Knucklehead! He’s definitely a bird dog tho I’ve never hunted with him (I can tell he’s got the chops). They are charismatic beauts!

There are a some tool-less adjustments that can be made to change the tension in the screen. If the tension isn't equal top & bottom it can get finicky and hop the track. Biggest issue we see is when the area around the track gets debris, it can jam the screen. Read the screen manual, pretty simple fix. We love ours!

Thx! But our manual is long AWOL. Does anyone know the manufacturer -- I can try to look it up online.

After a learning curve I have grown to love the retractable screen. Several important points: Keep the track on the floor clean so it does not drag. If it drags the top will close faster than the bottom and problems happen. Never let the screen close itself..... always hang on to it as it retracts. And most importantly, always keep the bar completely vertical as you close it. As long as that bar stays vertical nothing bad happens.

I do think our tension is off - we're pretty careful about keeping it clean, closing, etc ...

Screen tweaks
Here's the manual on the screen and adjustments. I ordered a spare because we have 3 dogs and wasn't sure it would survive their learning curve..........

We love the screen door . Just follow others advice and you will be fine . Your keeping the track clean that’s important but yes that tension can need adjustments from time to time . Pat

I quickly learned that the screen operates much more smoothly if I control opening and closing it with my hand placed about 8 to 10 inches below the handle and locking mechanism. Frictional forces between the top and bottom of the screen are much more balanced there, reducing the tendency to bind.

True, so I added a handle inside and outside to control the screen. Kinda goofy not to have one from the factory!

Monitoring adjustments like this makes all the difference. I was able to keep mine working great all the time and quite liked it. Not too many better options for the original model Escape door.
It takes but minutes to do a good adjustment that last a long, long time, and keeps it working smooth.

Super helpful suggestions, all. Thank you!
Charlie, etc - would you mind sharing a photo of the additional handles you put on so I can get an idea? Gratzi!

I didn't even go to the trouble of adding a handle. I just placed a piece of black electrician's tape on the front edge of the door frame where trial & error showed the door operates most smoothly as a reminder to use that location to operate the door.

I frequently squirt some "dry" silicone into the tracks. Seems to help.
