I assume you mean fuel economy, and I doubt there would be very much of a difference. You would have more frontal area on the 5.0, which depending upon the power of the tow would create a bit more drag. It weighs a bit more too, which would affect fuel economy somewhat too.

Under most conditions, I get 13.9 with my 2012 F150 3.5L EcoBoost.

Yes I did mean the difference in miles per gallon (fuel economy), between a bumper pull that sits behind the truck and the 5.0.

Hi: Marky... Reace& Tammy used to say they got slightly better mileage and performance with the 5.0 vs the 19'er. They both prefer the 5.0/5.0TA style trailer, but then they can have any Escape trailer they want. Alf

Don't know if it'll help you any, but my old sticky bumper pull was the same width and height as the 5.0TA, although the TA weighs about 500 lbs more. The sticky had square corners and edges other then the front top edge which was rounded beveled back a bit. The 2012 F150 Eco 3.5 got 10-12 with the sticky, usually 10.5 mpg. The same truck with the TA gets 12-14, averaging 13.2 mpg.

My F150 has 4x4, longbed, and the max payload package. I'm taking it hat Carl's differs.

That's what I figured, 4x4 vs 4x2 would explain the difference in mpg's.

This was recently discussed in Fuel efficient tow vehicle., starting at post #23.

The 5.0 and 5.0TA are taller than the conventional trailers which adds frontal area and therefore drag, but sit closer to the truck which reduces drag. I don't know if anyone other than Reace has pulled both a 5.0TA and a 21 Foot with the same truck in the same conditions to make a direct comparison, and I don't know if Reace really had the same conditions or how closely he checked fuel consumption.

At least in the 2015 F150, expect 2 mpg less with a 4x4 vs a 4x2, all other items being equal. Reace didn't have his new 2015 yet when he towed the 5.0TA down here in April, so we really couldn't compare mileage.

You can not tell from this picture but there are two solar panels, a 6" pipe of fishing rods, poles for a yard hammock, 4' step ladder, & a tote full of charcoal in the bed of the truck. I have no problem loading and taking more stuff than I will ever use.

I couldn't even begin to tell you. I got crappy fuel mileage with my 2000 Ford F-150.. Triton V8... pulling a 16' Scamp Deluxe. Daily driver... filled up every six business days.

Fast Forward, a 2014 Ford F-150 w/Ecoboost. Don't know the displacement (3.5?) don't care! I get better fuel mileage than that old tug and love my new tug. Honestly, almost ZERO mileage difference between towing and non-towing, but my truck isn't one of those fancy/dancy aluminum body Fords

With our 1992 F250 5.8 cu engine long bed averaged 15.5 going from California to Canada . Truck loaded up for trailer and things to bring to kids on Whidbey including a solid Oak mantel I made for them . Coming home with trailer averaged 11 mi . Still loaded up bringing things back from the kids . I was pretty happy . Truck has 2 tanks for gas . Pat

Is there a recessed space on either side of the 5.0 TA bed that a person could eject themselves to and then make an orderly dash to the stairs, instead of rear-hopping to the end of the bed. I would be hypothetically referring to those infernal midnight trips to the bathroom. Of course, I'm just asking for a friend...

If anyone has any pictures of the edges of the bed, well, I would be grateful...Escape's photos don't show that too clearly.

While there is a recessed space on both sides I don't see how it would do you any good getting out of bed, for us it's just a sort of storage. Window covers, extra blanket, and such.

The space is maybe 12-inches wide on either side and is only good for storage. It could not be used for egress. Rear hopping is the only way to get out of the bed, but neither person has to crawl over the other. And I also have a friend who gets up a couple of times each night. Must be a common "problem!"

The mattress sits on the floor of the sleeping loft, so the recess depth is just the depth of whatever you get for a mattress.

Carl's right. To explain this a little more, look at the photos on the Escape website: there is a cabinet or panel on each side, so only the part (most) of the mattress width is accessible from the steps.


The trailer body is 88" wide at the widest point, and a Queen bed is 60" wide, so the spaces must be less than 14" each... about 12" makes sense. You can see this dimension as the width of the cabinets at the far end of the bed, in the front corners of the trailer.

I agree that none of the photos on the Escape website show the areas beside the bed very well.

I see the photos appeared in my previous post. The photo on the left shows the accordion folder I keep all trailer related documents in and an Ikea wastebasket. The cabinet next to the staircase is just barely out of the photo to the bottom. The photo on the right shows a larger white wastebasket we use as a dirty laundry hamper, behind it is a 19-inch TV covered by a blanket, at the white box contains a 150 watt inverter. All these items take up most of the width of the space, so you can see it is not very wide. On the other hand, it would be a perfect walkway for a pet cat!

Thanks Carl. Very helpful!! I see now what people were saying. The top step got me confused. Almost looked like a raised bed frame like in the 21'. Now I see its not. Definitely not. Which is fine.
