Now we know, for sure, to stop there, now that we know the 'rest of the story'.
Thanks to Iowa (the Paul Harvey of the Escape Forum) Dave.

The end of the story?
Although clearly not as much fun as if they had gone to Loa, the kids got the problem solved in Mesquite. The Mesquite Ford dealer, another Ken Garff outlet, was MUCH different than the branch in St. George, or the guy in Cedar City. They WERE VERY helpful, so put them on the list of places to call when you are in trouble. Although, if they had just driven up to the door...the reaction may have been different. Maybe not. Who knows?
In any case, Mesquite Ford took very good care of them, even loaned them a truck to use so they good do some shopping to restock while they worked on the F150.
IT turned out to be the throttle valve body, for the third time. ( I'm sensing a trend here.) The mechanic also recommended a "fuse pump relocate kit" which is recommended for "stalling conditions". Not quite sure what that its other than about $236, compared to the $478 for the "throttle body and motor assy".
Both jobs done, they threw in an oil change and sent my family on the way. Which at the end of it all, is really all I'm concerned with. So should you find yourself in trouble and can't get to Loa, and you are driving a Ford...head to Mesquite.
Its been a tough year for all. This was a back up trip for our family planned-for-two years dory trip for 17 days though the Grand Canyon. Just happy they can get gone for a while. And yes, I know, that compared to what others are suffering this year a few bumps in the road on an amazing trip amount to nothing at all.
(Sure hope that A/C unit on the Escape is working because I never use it. Guess that's one more thing to put on the list.)

You never know when you’re a stranger in a strange land. I’m glad that your family is
Going to salvage a good part of their trip. They made a memory, that’s for sure.

We used to stop in Mesquite for a nice Sunday brunch buffet at one of the casinos there, on the way to or from St. George.

Awwww, that is very sad about your Canyon trip. Are they making any concession on the permit? I had a Rogue permit (September) and they sent me an email with the choice to transfer the permit to the same day next year. Which I gladly did.

We were going with OARS, not a private trip. But the timing was critical with everybody healthy, finances, vacation time all aligning.

Bill,
You suggest getting a OBD bluetooth code reader. Can you recommend a quality brand/model to purchase? Amazon has so many choices. Thanks. -Tom

Great news Glen,
So glad the issue was resolved and your family is on their way. Also that they can not feel rushed to get back home and compromise safety. Hope they enjoy the rest of their trip.
Cheers!

Obviously not Bill, but FWIW I've been very happy with the OBDLink products for Ford applications such as the OP's. Not the cheapest but extremely robust and reliable performers, well-proven, and well-supported. https://www.obdlink.com/mxp/- This is not an 'all-in-one' OBD reader - it is the OBD-port data link only, requiring an external device (smartphone / tablet / laptop PC) running an appropriate app / software to display the data.
- The MX / MX+ models read not only standard OBD data common to all vehicles but also read the Ford-specific MS-CAN data (this the data pertaining to specific Ford proprietary systems diagnostics / individual vehicle modules)
- Supports a huge range of different diagnostic / instrument-readout apps / software on a huge range of Android, iOS, and windows devices
- Interfaces with FORScan FORScan freeware, an incredibly robust and well-documented / supported (Free!) software package. When running the Windows version of FORScan on a laptop you can access more Ford vehicle module diagnostics data than anything short of Ford's own (very expensive) dealer diagnostics tools. Be careful to note that the other-than-Windows-PC versions of FORScan are much more limiting in capability.
The tool may provide more than you think you'll ever want, but it's great to have the capability when you need it, IMO. Just for your consideration.

Tom,
The one chosen and purchased by my engineer son is HikerenWIFI Super OBD mini. It says on the device “Supports all OBDII protocols”. The main thing to watch for is some of the cheaper ones don’t communicate with iPhones/Apple. I llooked and it can be found on Amazon for $24.99. I’m not adept enough to post a link. This is used in conjunction with an app called Dash Command. I don’t know if that app is free or costs a little but it works on my iPhone 11 for any car I plug the device into. I’m not sure if it is Bluetooth or WIFI. I guess WIFI.
I can read codes and various engine gauges. It also can clear codes.
I don’t leave home without it.
Bill

I use this one Panlong Bluetooth OBD2 OBDII Car Diagnostic Scanner Check Engine Light for Android - Compatible with Torque Pro, along with the Torque Pro app. I actually bought a second one after trying it out. It worked(s) fine in my '05 F250 Crew Cab Diesel, my '06 Honda S2000, and my '17 MB Sprinter van.
No need to spend more, it is just a Bluetooth communication device, the software on your phone is what does the work.

Snow tires

Way back when the first Oldsmobile Tornados came out we would mount snow tires and they were the big nubby ones back then, on the front of a few Tornados in the late Fall, also studded snow tires. The weight of engine plus those snow tires was Pretty effective for getting
around. The concrete in our area is made with limestone rock. In that limestone, from some quarries is rock called Chirt. It’s not especially good to have chirt in concrete. However young guys driving the old man’s Tornado with studded snow tires, would hop on it coming out of a stop light on dry paving and the studs on concrete with chirt would shoot out sparks behind the front tires. Didn’t take much to entertain us young Czech boys in those days. Still doesn’t.
Our family didn’t have a Tornado but I had the great experience of delivering customer’s cars back to their workplace after service and mentally pretending they were mine.
