Subaru

Have you seen the TV ad Subaru has been running recently?
Apparently the headlights move in the direction you turn the steering wheel. So if you see a deer at the side of the road and aim for it, you'll see the moment of impact.

My headlights always go in the direction I turn the wheel. Do the Subaru lights turn more then the car? Seems like an accident waiting to happen.

Yes, I noticed those ads. I was surprised that Subaru bothered to put in a feature was a novelty when Citroën did it in 1970, rather than a fully functional modern adaptive lighting solution.

This system requires motors to turn the lamps, controlled by the car's computer system. That will be expensive to fix, but at least it should be more reliable than the hydraulic system of a Citroën SM, which usually ended up broken and cross-eyed.

Bob, assuming that you don't drive a Citroën DS or SM, your headlights go in the direction your car's body points. These "directional" headlights turn with the wheels, so normally they point straight ahead when driving straight, and further into the turn than the body of the car (and thus normal headlights) when turning.

Yes I remember the Citroën headlight system, specifically the ongoing repairs with them Along with their hydraulic suspension and window washer brake pedal
Some customer cars just keep bringing back memories.

Brian,
I remember those Citroens about the end of my college days and the comments about them going cross eyed as well as an ethnic joke about snow tires on the rear wheels of the Oldsmobile Tornado. Later a friend of mine who had been in the Peace Corps related adventures with the Citroen in the African Desert. The one he had was an incredibly dependable unit. The one practical thing that I kinda wish I had are the "windshield" wipers on the headlights that used to be on the Volvos. They worked great on my brother's 850. Not much new under the sun, just a different way to power it up.

The Tucker had a center headlight (also known as the Cyclops eye) that would activate at steering angles of more that 10 degrees lighting the car's path around corners.

I also thought of the Tucker when I read this. I saw one at Francis Ford Coppola's winery in California; he directed the movie "Tucker". The display mentioned the moveable headlight. Nearby was Col. Kilgore's surfboard from "Apocalypse Now".

I've seen two Tuckers in my life. One in Reno at the Auto Museum there and one that is in a private collection here in Iowa that was at an auto show at the Cedar Rapids Airport one time. There's an article on the web called Where have all the Tucker's gone that tells the location of 21 of these interesting automobiles. The Tucker story is quite a story. If you're interested in cars, the Wikipedia article is pretty good and I believe a reasonably factual account of this interesting chapter of American manufacturing.

I hear the Tucker is coming back, and will be coal-fired.

I'm thinking of ordering one as long as it is designed to run on clean coal. I'm gonna name her Anthracite Annie. Rita says she'll be the stoker.

Lexus (Lexi?) have that feature. My Wife's RS the inside headlight turns a bit towards the inside of a turn, either side. I used to have a GS and it also had it.
