Sumas border crossing closed

BC CTV news tonight is reporting that the Sumas border crossing is closed due to flooding.
Might be worth checking on the situation if you are travelling for pickup Monday.
At least there has been a pause in the heavy rainfall.

Wow, I did not realize it was a low spot nor water was around. Thanks for the heads up for those traveling to Chilliwack. Is there another crossing near or between Sumas and Osoyoos? Those are the only two I have ever used.

A 15 mile drive west of Sumas will take you to another crossing. Not sure of its name. North of Lynden. Certainly closer to Chilliwack than any other. Can't speak to Osoyoos.

I believe that one is Abbotsford. It is straight north of Lynden.

Crossing near Abbotsford is Sumas.

For us in Vancouver we sometimes cross at Aldergrove.Closer to Vancouver is the Pacific crossing which we call the truck crossing and the furthest to the west is the Blaine -Douglas crossing which is the largest and closest to the ocean.

I saw the flooding on the news. Should be able to cross at Lynden, though.

Right, Sumas is near Abbotsford. That westward crossing is Aldergrove/Lynden. Here's a map.

Border crossings are typically known by different names on each side of the border. The Wikipedia table of crossings starting from the Douglas / Blaine-Peach Arch crossing is in order from west to east along the 49th parallel border, followed by the Great Lakes crossings. There are a lot, but some are little places open short hours.

You missed Pt. Roberts. aka Boundary Bay. Point Roberts is the little chunk of US that came from drawing a straight line (except for the islands.) But we have to enter at Blaine to get to the Pt. Roberts border crossing and back into the US.

Nice small campground there- Point Roberts Lighthouse Park- run by Whatcom County. Plus group sites (no hookups but closer to the water than the regular campground).

Yes, it's on the 49th parallel, but I deliberately left it out because it's not a useful crossing for someone travelling from Canada to the U.S. with their trailer. It does have an interesting story, though.

Point Bob used to be where Canadians went to drink beer on Sunday. Now that you can buy beer from government liquor stores on Sunday, and restaurants serve it, and pubs are open on Sunday, Point Bob serves no useful purpose.
There is a recurring movement to eliminate the border, cede the place to Canada in return for some other piece of dumb along the border.

The Sunday "Blue" rules were always in the way of fun. I remember one Sunday, while attending college in Iowa, someone broke into the soda machine and retrieved the money, maybe $10 in quarters. Then bunch of us put in another dollar or so and I drove about 100 miles each way to Illinois to purchase 4 cases of beer. Returned and about 6 of us drove out into a local cornfield for a party. Very interesting to drive thru a corn field as the stalks go down in front and then pop back up behind you to envelop you.
The soda machine was not replaced as punishment.

Does anyone know what river caused the flooding?

Was it the Sumas River or the Mighty Fraiser?

That whole area seems very flat.

The farmers around Sumas grow crops in fields that appear to be deliberately flooded on occasion, so I'm not surprised that the area is in a flood plain. I've seen tiny two-row harvester machines in the fields. I've never stopped to ask what they are growing because the road through the fields has steep shoulders and there are no pull-offs, and I've been towing my trailer when I go through (well, except for the first time). Does anyone know what is grown there?

They are growing a lot of hops there now. I talked to Tammy about it. She said it was a pretty big crop years ago, then faded and is now pretty big again. I saw them putting up the climbing poles and cord or wires, whatever they grow on. That’s why I asked her. Don’t know about flooding the fields.
