An advantage of the built-in unit is that it won't be stolen and you can't accidentally leave it behind (at home or in a campsite).
Another advantage of a built-in might be that the display and control panel is built-in in the interior, rather than on the face of a unit outside.
The only advantages I can think of for a portable unit are that it might be cheaper, and that if it fails it is trivial to replace (no installation).
