We watched it too. I remarked that I kind of remembered seeing this movie once before. Rita remembered it better than I could and remarked that it was much more enjoyable now that we own a trailer. Believeable too. Thanks so much for alerting us. Next up My Fair Lady. Can't beat the classics.

We recorded it to watch again. Nancy acquires the name Lucy whenever she starts to collect the little heart shaped rocks from along the beach. As a car person I have always enjoyed seeing the problem of the Mercury towing the trailer up hill but somehow it became a Lincoln for that period of time. Proof that you cannot have too big of an engine just in case you come to a hill, or is that a mountain.

First off I noticed something wasn't quite right with the mountain tow car but couldn't process that it was a Lincoln. So after Jack made that observation, and it got brighter in our living room, I had to do the research. This cost me about 2 hours of my retired life this morning. Not only did I learn all about the Lincoln 317.5 cu. in. Engine, but my search morphed into the early 50's Mexican Road Race which was dominated for several years by those big Lincolns.
Guess that's what retirement, an iPad and a rainy December day are for. Thanks Jack, if the tranny would stay together and the shocks were up to a level tow, I believe the old Lincoln's, Mercs and even the Fords would be up to it. How about the old desert water bags, sold a few of them as a kid with his first job in a Standard oil station.

I had seen parts of this movie before but saw it in full length this time. As I am always interested in the mechanical end of things, I wonder if any of you noticed the wheel dolly under the trailer hitch. You can see this best in the scenes where they are going up the pass. I assume this would be absolutely necessary as the tongue weight of that trailer would have the hitch on the street. Does anything like that exist today? Loren

I remember this movie from when I was a kid. After the movie, my parents told me how we got to California. In 1948, when I was 1½ (ah, I remember that ride in the back seat so well), my parents went from Buffalo, NY to LA in a 1940 Ford, towing a 27 ft. house trailer. Burned out a clutch somewhere close to the Grand Canyon, with all the mountain grades. Route 66 was two lanes.
The water bag for desert driving hung in the garage for several years. It went with us on vacation when I was 5 or 6, hanging on the front bumper guard.

Yes, or at least it existed recently. This scheme was never a good idea, and now that suitable tow vehicles are available hardware like this is rarely used... and may not be legal.

The only one that I knew of in production was really crude backyard-grade stuff: the Hitch Helper from Stinger Hitch. That company appears to now be out of business, but here's an old article about it: The Stinger Hitch Helper

We used to tow a two horse trailer with a Lincoln it towed great up and down mountains. My dad did tow with a Mustang once not so great TV.

Oh my Don. 2 Rochester , New York babies here about the same time coming to California for the better life . I also remember Dad had those water bags hanging from our radiators. The funny thing is when my parent's came here we lived in a trailer in a trailer park . Trailers I guess are always in my life -but now just for fun . Keep dry . Pat

Wow, Pat. The story's the same. When we got here, my dad went to work for Northrup (on the 1st flying wings), so we lived in a trailer park in Hawthorne. Then, when dad's job went to Pt. Mugu, we moved to a trailer park in Ventura. 1st year I had a license I learned to pull the boat trailer, and have been dragging 'em around ever since.
We're dry. 0.12" last night. Twice as much coming tonight, so you stay dry as well. (And again, all of you in wet climates: quit laughing).

This is kind of neat who knew . Our stories are pretty similar . Now we are Escapee's in California .
