Hi Dick

We had hoped to pull Alf's old 5.0 with a Frontier but couldn't find the right one so ended up getting a 2wd f150 Supercab with 4.6. It pulls great and handles the extra pin weight with that heavy foam mattress (I've had to move the mattress over a bit and that is not easy). I am getting close to 17mpgUS towing.

BTW always meant to ask you where you got your 5.0 shelter and what it cost.

Hi Adrian.
The screen shelter came from ETI and I think it cost $200. We don't usually put it up for one-night stays, but for anything longer or too many critters I would not be without it.

Dick

To add to Bob's information in #14 above:
Today I weighed my new 5.0TA. It was loaded for camping (but we're pretty frugal in what we take), and the fresh water tanks and holding tanks were empty.
TV without the trailer
Front axle--3280 pounds (1487 kg)
Rear axle--2460 lbs (1115 kg)
Total--5740 lbs (2603 kg)

TV with trailer attached:
Truck front axle--3260 lbs (1478 kg)
Truck rear axle--3090 lbs (1401 kg)
Truck total--6350 lbs (2880 kg)
Pin weight--610 lbs (276 kg)
Trailer axles--3490 lbs (1583 kg)
Total trailer weight--4100 lbs (1859 kg)

I was shocked at the low pin weight. It is only 14.8% of the total weight, which is obviously a little lower than the 15-25% recommended. If we add bicycles to the back it will probably fall even further. Does anyone know if this low pin weight percentage will cause problems with stability when towing? Coming home from Chilliwack it seemed to tow nicely.

Thanks, Bill

I see no reason for a fifth-wheel trailer to inherently need much more hitch weight than a conventional trailer, although the mass is distributed right out to the front end, increasing the polar moment of inertia and thus decreasing stability. I think the higher hitch weight fraction usually suggested is more about what you can handle with a hitch over the truck axle, rather than what is needed for stability.

Escape 5th wheel pin weight is usually this low when empty, but it seems that the way many owners load these trailers the loaded distribution ends up more front-heavy. 15% is still a substantial hitch weight, and the truck can control the trailer - and thus resist sway - better with the hitch over the axle than behind the bumper.

My mpg's are around 15.5-16 US. w/ 5.0TA... depending on the terrain. We usually travel the Interstate's as we always seem to do better there.
We will be staying in Hunting Island St Pk. SC. Mar.31- Apr. 10, if youd like a tour!!! Alf

Alf... I love you... but give me a break 16/mpUSg is approx. 14.7l/100km I owned a 2013 Frontier Pro4X before the Titan and one couldn't get that gas mileage w/o trailer on the highway at 95 klicks...

Still Love you...

Hi Bill,

It's all to easy to get that pin weight up. Here's what we experienced... the grey & black tanks sit to the front of the axles... so keep them low. The storage under the steps is GREAT & we filled it... but added to the pin weight. Then the cubby above the propane tanks... again GREAT stuff. Have a BBQ & enough tools to rebuild a car in there... again added to the pin weight.. Then the cubby to the front of the door... Nice & high & deep... carry a torque wrench, collapsible shovel, chemicals, hoses, filters & some things that I am afraid to touch Oh, and forgot about the bed area. Carried a laser printer & a TV... Whoo Hoo... more pin weight. Oh ya, one can run it to over 900 lbs. without much effort.

However, balance this off with a full tank of fresh water (240 lbs.), an additional loaded bumper storage bin, a couple of bikes, a ladder, bigger solar panel on the roof, etc. and that should relieve the pin weight somewhat... Then one can even put more stuff under the front stairs...

What the heck... GVWR is only a number

Hope this helps

Larry

Hi: Stargeezer... I love you too!!! Now that that's out... I don't haul a telescope. I just put a set of Toyo H/T's (265 70R 16) on the tug so I'm looking for an increase in my fuel mileage!!! We got 100,000 kms out of the same size Goodrich Long Trail A/T's. Alf

Getting 25MPG highway flatlands with our 2013 Frontier Crew Cab with stock tires and 15MPG towing a 2000lb 2010 CampLite TT (aerodynamic shape of a brick).

Have been thinking about the next set of tires. Not sure if we can improve fuel economy towing until we have a more aerodynamic camper like the Escape.

Looking forward to touring your 5.0 TA @ Hunting Island SC! When we camped @ Cody WY last September, saw a 5.0 TA, but never met the owners or viewed the interior. Found out later the owner was "padlin" on this forum. Small world!

Hi: exploring/carolina... Your mileage sounds about like ours. The Toyo tires have a really healthy highway tread but not for off roading.
I'm looking forward to Hunting Island St. Pk. and camping with you. Alf

Stargeezer,

Your humorous attempt (#26 above) to help us drastically increase the pin weight of our new 5.0TA serves as a great reminder that Reace and Tammy have devised a trailer of amazing versatility.

It's a good thing Alf that you have that extra room! Not nearly as much in the 5.0 so can't drink as much, maybe that's a good thing

BTW finally got some LA totally awesome and used it today after washing yesterday, you're right does a great job especially along the belly band where green slime appeared to be growing after being parked nearly two months under trees in Whiteshell Provincial Park. Waxing this weekend, then off to KS in November and parked at Claire and Stephen's until we head further south in Jan.
