Using the oven broiler?

Greetings from the north! Has anyone successfully used the 'broil' on the Dometic oven? Yesterday, for the first time, we turned the oven dial to 'broil' on our 2018 Escape 21, then looked inside the oven and realized there is no top element (as on a regular home oven). According to Dave at Escape, no RV ovens have this broil element, and the 'broil' setting just maintains the oven at the hottest temperature. Can anyone offer any guidance here? Thanks!

Hummm, I remember from years ago in my Sticks 'n Bricks gas oven, there was no top fuel source. Broiling actually occurred at the bottom. Gas doesn't work the same as electric.

We have used the broiler on our Dickinson Marine range. It works okay, but not the best broiler I have used. The oven itself is great.

I hope that was just a miscommunication with Dave. Broiling is done with these ranges by placing the food under the burner, not in the usual space above the burner and oven 'floor'... and by setting the controls to full-on. Obviously, what you're broiling can't be very tall. This is how gas ranges have traditionally worked, and how most RV ranges are still made, although the home ranges typically have a separate broiler drawer or door (where an electric range usually has a storage drawer) and these RV ranges have just one door for the whole range. If you put food in the top space and set 'broil', you're just baking on really high temperature.

From the manual for the range:
Quote:
USING THE BROILER:
a. Light the oven pilot as described in #2 (above).
b. Push in and rotate the oven control knob counter-clockwise to BROIL.
c. Center a broiler pan under the broiler flame.
d. Move and turn the food over frequently to ensure even browning and cooking
Unfortunately, since the burner is just one tube (not a U or H shape), it doesn't broil evenly; I have the same range and find it relatively useless for broiling.

Unlike most RV ranges, including the Atwood models installed by Escape, Jim's very slick Dickinson has a separate broiling burner in the top of the oven.

Wink Using the oven broiler?

Thanks everyone for your replies. Guess we'll leave the broiling for home; good thing we carry a portable barbeque!

Isn't your broiler at home trying to emulate a BBQ anyway?

On our trip home from escape in May I made some Italian sausage and peppers in the Dutch oven, to go over some pasta. Sitting at the dinette I looked over at our brand new oven ? Does it broil also? Yes it does! Homemade garlic bread to go with our pasta! Yum! Yes it's a small burner and you have to move stuff around to cook evenly But it worked great. It's a camper oven / broiler, A Viking range it is not.

We use the bottom of our Atwood on broil mode fairly often. It does an ok job as long as your expectations and technique are appropriate. Made some lovely crab nachos from crab we fished out ourselves a few days ago.

Aw, thanks [emoji51]

Now how would one pictogramize ‘scrapple’, that’s what I’m wondering? The apple part is easy, it’s that first part that’s tricky.

Moderators, we have a goofy guy in our midst that needs dealing with. He should at least supply a poutine meal for others.
